Health and spiritual well-fare in adults from Porto Alegre

The purpose of this study is to investigate the interrelation between spiritual well-being and general health. The Spiritual Well-being Scale (Paulotzian e Ellison) and The General Health Questionnaire (Goldberg) were used to a nonclinical sample of 506 people, resident in Porto Alegre (RS). Statistical analysis of the data showed that there is a significant positive correlation between health and spiritual wellbeing. The aplications of this study point out an inclusion of spirituality in the conception of health, combined with biological, psychological and social domains and confirm that spirituality can make an important contribution to health promotion and disease prevention.
