Training Paths of Psychologists from the Expanded Family Healthcare Centers

Abstract

This article discusses the formation trajectory of psychologists working at the Extended Family Healthcare Centers (NASF, in Portuguese) in a municipality of Santa Catarina. This is an exploratory qualitative study based on the method of thematic oral history. In-depth interviews were conducted with five psychologists, resulting in five narratives treated by thematic content analysis. From the analysis, the following categories emerged: recognizing the way; on choosing Psychology - the first steps; university education - what paths led to the NASF?; and arriving at NASF - now what? The results indicate that psychologists have a broad understanding of the training path, assuming that this learning process is endless, continuous. They also problematized the training offered by undergraduate courses in Psychology, still centered on the traditional clinical model and thus failing in offering adequate theoretical and technical tools for working in the Public Health field. Considering that, the curricula of Psychology courses must be improved to qualify the formation of these professionals for acting in Public Health, fostering their self-recognition as health professionals.
