THE EXPERIENCE OF MATERNITY TO THE BABY HOSPITALIZATION IN THE ICU: A ROLLER COASTER OF EMOTIONS

ABSTRACT

In this study, we sought to know the experience of mothers of babies hospitalized in a Neonatal or Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. This was a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive study. Nine mothers of infants admitted to six different Neonatal or Pediatric Intensive Care Units, located in five cities in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, participated in the study. A sociodemographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview were applied to collect the empirical material. The interviews were transcribed and subjected to content analysis. Three categories emerged from this analysis. The results reveal that it is difficult for mothers not being able to take their babies home after birth. They revealed feelings such as fear, insecurity, fear of the baby's death, impotence and guilt. The mothers experienced a sense of loss of control, concern for other children and the need for support from the mother and husband. The health team can alleviate the suffering of mothers by means of simple initiatives with a view to a better reception to mothers and family.
