Abstract
The present study investigated the conceptions of undergraduate students at a public university and a private one on resolutions of academic problems and self-monitoring. There were 23 students divided into two groups, with 11 belonging to a public Higher Education Institution and the other 12 volunteers from a private institution. We used the focus group method. The resolution of academic social problems was conceived as a set of situations involving different aspects of the experience in Higher Education and self-monitoring as the behavior of expression that can be monitored, evaluated and self-regulated. Although the student invests in affective, cognitive and social efforts and recognize and seek possible solutions, this does not necessarily promote the desired changes, indicating that it is only a stopgap among the different obstacles encountered in academic adaptation.
