The literacy among youth students in higler school

This research aimed at the knowledge of reading and writing practices present in the educational context from 30 students attending the 3rd Grade of a Middle Public School in Campinas, SP. The data were collected through an individual interview. Each interview was recorded and transcribed to data analysis. The answers were classified according to the context nearness. The results showed that reading practices such as remarks from notebooks (22,8%; F=26) and writing practices such as copies from blackboard (33,3%; F=22) are related to academic activities requested in the classroom, although placards reading (13,7%; F=27) and paintings with pitch on the school walls (“pichações”) (5,7%; F=11) also showed practices present in their daily life. We could conclude that educational literacy is linked to academic practices, it means, to traditional school activities which still prevail in the Middle School related to literacy social practices.
