In last number of our Journal of 2005 I think it would be interesting to present a brief overview of the results of the Speech-language and Hearing Science. Considering the current tendencies for evaluating the productivity of a science, we can point the following:

· regarding the development of specific human resources (masters and doctors) — today we have 7 CAPES master and doctorate programs;

· regarding the development of knowledge based on research — we have systematically received institutional financial support for research (CNPq, Fapesp, etc.);

· regarding the consolidated groups of researchers (productivity in research) — we have 72 consolidated groups in CNPq and researchers with productivity levels I and II;

· regarding journals that are indexed in international data base — we already have our indexation in MEDLINE and we are anxiously waiting for the other Speech-Language and Hearing Journals to be adequately evaluated by SCIELO. Then we will finally have indexations that are considered National QUALIS A.

In this number of the Journal we have 14 manuscripts. Mor and Azevedo (2005) compare the results of otoacoustic emissions with the functioning of the olivocochlear system in individuals with and without tinnitus. Results indicate that for individuals with unilateral tinnitus the overall amplitude of TEOAE was higher in the ear without tinnitus and that the olivocochlear system was less efficient in the ear with tinnitus.

In the study of Maciel & Leite (2005) the possible associations of anterior open bite to myofunctional disorders was studied in 130 scholars. The methodology used involved odontologic and speech-language evaluations. The significant results indicate anterior open bite as the most frequent pattern of dental occlusion associated to vertical facial growth and also to tongue interposition.

Another study about tinnitus was developed by Ferreira et al (2005), with the purpose of using a life quality questionnaire to investigate individuals with this disorder. The study indicated a significant result regarding the decline in the quality of life of these individuals.

Neves & Schochat (2005), giving continuity to their studies, presented a research about the maturation of auditory processing in children with learning difficulties. The study has a control group and the used tests were PSI, DNV and SSW. Results indicate that it is possible to observe chronological development variations and that children with learning difficulties present a delay in the auditory processing maturation.

Still about life quality, Grillo & Penteado (2005) present a study about the impact of voice on the lives of teachers. A hundred and twenty teachers were investigated. The results reinforce the need of actions in order to promote health in this area.

On the subject of specific language impairment, Puglisi et al (2005), using a grammatical basis, investigated the production and comprehension of closed class words (low semantic information). Their study, with 19 SLI children and with a control group of 29 children, indicate that the groups did not differ regarding the comprehension of prepositions. However, in terms of production, the performance of SLI children was qualitatively and quantitatively inferior.

Val et al (2005) presented an evolutive study (pre and post treatment) of 17 children with cerebral palsy. The purpose of the study was to correlate body posture to the stomatognathic system. The proposed treatment demonstrated to be effective. A significant development of posture and of the stomatognathic system was observed.

The purpose of the study of Anastásio and Momensohn-Santos (2005) was to identify speech signal in the presence of competitive sounds, in 22 participants with absence of contralateral acoustic reflex. The control group consisted of 21 participants. The results indicate that the absence of the contralateral acoustic reflex has an influence on the identification of the speech signal.

The search for a precise diagnosis of open bite, based on a cephalometric analysis, was the purpose of the study presented by Alimeri et al (2005). Through the analysis of 78 radiographies, using specific methodology, it was concluded that the use of the proposed mandibular measurements can favor a more precise diagnosis.

Degan e Puppin-Rontani (2005) studied the influence of sucking habits over the swallowing pattern and tongue rest position. The study compares two treatments and therefore evaluates the effectiveness of both (with a careful control system). Results indicate that treatment TMF was more efficient than REM.

Linassi et al (2005) verifies working memory abilities in relation to the severity of phonological deficits in 45 children with phonological disorder. Results indicate a positive correlation between memory and the severity level of the disorder.

Oliveira et al (2005) studied the linguistic manifestations of a family with Perisylvian Syndrome. The purpose of the study was to characterize the language of the family members. It is a sophisticated study, involving magnetic resonance imaging as well as psychological and speech-language tests. Results indicate deficits in several aspects of language and suggest a pattern of similarity between the mother and her children.

In the literature review presented by Lacerda et al (2005), the toxic effects of carbon monoxide exposure are explored.

In an opinion article, St Louis et al (2005) conduct an international research about the society's attitude regarding stuttering. The results obtained in three different countries (Brazil, Bulgaria and Turkey) are compared.

I end this editorial quoting Nietzsche "The juvenile charm of science is that the investigation of truth strongly contrasts with error. Science exercises capacity, not knowledge "
