  • Treatments of jute fibers aiming at improvement of fiber-phenolic matrix adhesion

Razera, Ilce Aiko Tanaka; Silva, Cristina Gomes da; Almeida, Érika Virgínia Raphael de; Frollini, Elisabete

    Resumo em Inglês:

Composites based on a thermoset phenolic matrix and jute fibers were prepared and characterized. The fibers were alternatively treated with ionized air or aqueous alkaline solution (mercerization) with the aim of introducing changes in the morphology, dispersive component of surface free energy, γS D (estimated by Inverse Gas Chromatography, IGC) and the acid/base character of their surfaces, shown by their ANs/DNs ratio (estimated by IGC), and their degree of crystallinity. The final objective was to investigate the influence of these modifications on the adhesion at the jute fiber/phenolic matrix interface in the composites. The untreated jute fiber showed 50% crystallinity, γS D=18 mJ m- 2 and ANs/DNs= 0.9 (amphoteric surface), tensile strength = 460 MPa and maximum elongation = 0.7%, while the respective composite had an impact strength of 72.6 J m- 1. The treatments positively modified the fibers and the adhesion at the interface was better in the composites reinforced with treated fibers than with untreated fibers. The best set of results was exhibited by the fiber treated with 10% NaOH [46% crystallinity, γS D = 26 J m- 2 (phenolic matrix γS D = 32 J m- 2), ANs/DNs = 1.8 (surface predominantly acidic, similar to phenolic matrix, ANs/DNs = 1.4), tensile strength approximately 900 MPa, maximum elongation = 2%, impact strength of respective composite approximately 95 J m- 1)]. The fibers treated for 5 h with ionized air exhibited favorable properties [(45% crystallinity, γS D = 27 J m- 2, ANs/DNs = 2.1 (acidic surface)] for further use as reinforcement of a phenolic matrix, but their partial degradation during the treatment decreased their tensile properties (395 MPa and 0.5% for tensile strength and maximum elongation, respectively) and their action as reinforcement (impact strength of the respective composite approximately 73 J m- 1).
  • Solid state polymerization of pet/pc extruded blend: effect of reaction temperature on thermal, morphological and viscosity properties

Mendes, Luis Claudio; Mallet, Isaac Albert; Cestari, Sibele Piedade; Dias, Frederico Gonçalves de Albuquerque; Pereira, Patricia Soares da Costa

    Resumo em Inglês:

A systematic study of solid state polymerization (SSP), concerning the melt extruded blend of poly(ethylene terephthalate)/polycarbonate (catalyzed PET/PC, 80/20 wt %), as a function of temperature range (180-190°C) for a fixed time (6 h) is presented. The materials obtained were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry/derivative thermogravimetry (TG/DTG), optical microscopy (OM) and intrinsic viscosity (IV) analysis. After SSP, at all reaction temperatures, PET glass transition and heating crystallization temperatures slightly decreased, melting temperature slightly increased, while degree of crystallinity was practically invariable. The DTG curves indicated that, at least, three phases remained. The OM images revealed that the morphology is constituted of a PET matrix and a PC dispersed phase. In the interfacial region we noticed the appearance of structures like bridges linking the matrix and the dispersed domains. These bridges were correlated to the PET/PC block copolymer obtained during blending in the molten state. IV increased for all polymerization temperatures, due to the occurrence of PET chain extension reactions - esterification and transesterification. The IV range for bottle grade PET was achieved.

Aouachria, Kamira; Quintard, Guilhem; Massardier-Nageotte, Valérie; Belhaneche-Bensemra, Naima

    Resumo em Inglês:

Plasticizers play a key role in the formulation of polymers and in determining their physical properties and processability. This study examines the effect of di(2-ethyl hexyl)phthalate (DEHP) as plasticizer on the thermal and mechanical properties of PVC/PMMA blends. For that purpose, blends of variable composition, from 0 to 100 wt%, were prepared in the presence (15, 30 and 50 wt %) and in the absence of di(2-ethyl hexyl)phthalate. The thermal degradation of the blends was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in an atmosphere of synthetic air in the temperature range of 50-550°C. The variation of the mechanical properties, such as tensile behavior, hardness and impact resistance, were investigated for all blend compositions. The effect of the plasticizer on the same properties was considered. The results obtained show that a range of properties can be generated according to the blend compositions. Therefore, the addition of PMMA to the blends stabilized PVC, for the initial thermal degradation, and the addition of the plasticizer caused a decrease of stress at break and Young modulus.
  • Flow visualization & extrudate swell behavior of natural rubber compound in annular die capillary rheometer

Intawong, Naret; Wiratket, Auttapong; Meechue, Pholkrit

    Resumo em Inglês:

This research aims to study the flow pattern and extrudate swell properties of a Natural Rubber (NR) compound in a constant shear rate capillary rheometer, using two types of annular die: convergent annular and divergent annular. Results revealed that flow patterns that occurred in the barrels of both types of annular dies were significantly different, especially the vortex flow at the barrel wall and at the die entrance. This difference in flow pattern significantly affected both diameter swell and thickness swell of the NR compound. It was also found that thickness swell was higher than diameter swell in every test condition. This difference could be explained by analysis of the complex flow pattern at the die entrance.
  • Failure criterion for adhesively bonded joints using Arcan´s experimental method

Santos, Demetrio Jackson dos; Batalha, Gilmar Ferreira

    Resumo em Inglês:

Characterization of polymeric materials mechanical behavior requires some previous knowledge about their structure, which allows the choice of more appropriated models and methods. Polymeric materials, below their glass transition temperature (Tg), may be handled as perfect elastic solids, allowing the use of classic mechanics to characterize their behavior. Polymers above their Tg present a viscous contribution to mechanical behavior, which has to be taken into consideration by modeling it. Adhesively bonded joint, joining of different materials using a polymer as adhesive, adds to the mentioned requirements more parameters, such as surface roughness, adhesive thickness and different types of contributions to adhesively bonded joint strength. This work has the purpose of presenting a mechanical behavior characterization of adhesive bonded joints, concerning their average stress at rupture. A modified Arcan´s device was used to obtain the average stress at rupture under different angles or loading conditions, such as pure shear 0°, pure tensile strength 90° and combined conditions. The experimental results were applied to a theoretical model, which takes into consideration the hydrostatic contribution to the mechanical behavior, called Drucker-Prager Model, which was initially developed to characterize soils.
  • Biocomposites based on chitosan and carnauba straw powder

Pereira, Márcia Rodrigues; Marques, Jéssica Souza; Fonseca, José Luís Cardozo

    Resumo em Inglês:

In this study carnauba straw powder was submitted to chemical treatments using alkali (NaOH) or hexane, in order to increase its hydrophilicity and to investigate its potential use for the development of a biodegradable composite. Biocomposites were prepared in solution, using carnauba straw powder and chitosan as matrix, with powder contents of 10 and 50 wt %. Both, straw powder and biocomposites, were characterized by chemical composition analysis, FTIR, TGA, DSC and SEM. According to the results, the chemical treatment using NaOH was efficient in removing the soluble components of the powder and cleaning its surface. DSC analyses demonstrated that the addition of high powder loadings does not reduce the thermal stability of the composite. The elastic modulus of the biocomposites obtained with 10 wt % of untreated carnauba powder remained unaltered, decreasing for a filler content of 50 wt %. The effect of NaOH chemical treatment was more evident for the composite with 50 wt % of powder.
  • Spectroscopy analyses of polyurethane/polyaniline IPN using computational simulation (Amber, MM+ and PM3 method)

    Rangel-Vazquez, Norma-Aurea; Sánchez-López, Carlos; Felix, Francisco Rodríguez

    Resumo em Inglês:

The polyurethane (PU)/polyaniline (PANI) IPN, at three composition ratios (95/05, 75/25, 60/40), were analyzed, after the action of the urease enzyme, by means of the Hyperchem 8v software. Theoretical analysis of Gibbs free energy, FTIR, and 13C-NMR were done. The generation of functional groups due to hydrolysis was analyzed by FTIR. The 13C-NMR spectra of the three ratios showed a superposition of the individual spectra of PU and PANI and an appreciable decrease of the signals due to the action of the urease enzyme. The orbits showed that the electron density of the HOMO (Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital) is predominantly localized on the C-C bond, indicating that the binding of PU/PANI with the urease enzyme contains a vacant d-orbital. It is concluded that the adsorption of the urease enzyme increases the degree of hydrolysis of the IPN.

Lopes, Luciana Rodrigues Barreto; Soares, Vera Lúcia Pereira; Barcellos, Maria Teresa C.; Mansur, Claudia Regina Elias

The commercialization of explosives in emulsions, including the ANFO dynamite, caused a significant increase in global consumption between 1960 and 1980, due to an increase in transportation and manufacture safety. The surfactants used in these emulsions are esters, amides or imides, derived from polyisobutylene with succinic anhydride terminal groups (PIBSA). In this work, surfactants derived from the reaction of PIBSA with polyoxyethylenodiamines were synthesized and characterized by infrared spectrometry and by Gel Permeation Chromatography. The synthesized surfactants have been evaluated as to the effect of its structures in reducing the interfacial tension of water in oil emulsions and all were able to reduce the interfacial tension of this system.

The reduction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the latexes produced by emulsion polymerization is a viable option, but it may compromise the performance of the latex in some situations. Different techniques for reduction of residual monomers and VOCs concentrations were studied for understanding the effect of these techniques and VOCs concentrations on the application properties of latexes and paints. Styrene/2-ethylhexyl acrylate latices functionalized with acrylic acid and acrylamide were produced by emulsion polymerization, followed by removal of residues and other VOCs with a chemical or physical technique, or with the combination of both. The effect of various parameters related to reduction techniques of VOCs, type of initiator, reducing agent and nitrogen stripping with steam were studied and correlated with the properties of latexes and paints. The combination of chemical and physical techniques was more effective for reducing the monomers and VOCs to latexes. The techniques employed for reduction of VOCs had a negative effect on the end-use properties of latex and paints. The abrasion resistance of the paint film was dependent on the technique employed and on VOCs concentration.

In this study, the objective was to produce biodegradable nanobiocomposites based on pectin and cinnamon nanoemulsion having satisfactory properties for application as active packaging. Procedures for preparing and incorporating these nanoemulsions in the polymeric matrix are described. The nanocomposites were analyzed through: thickness measurements, solubility, mechanical properties and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A subjective analysis indicated the nanocomposite made with pectin 2 % w/v and nanoemulsions prepared with stirring speed of 16000 rpm in 2 min was the most suitable for application in packaging. The nanocomposites containing nanoemulsions with smaller nanodroplets had greater strength and elongation, being less soluble. The control of these properties by varying the average size of the nanoemulsion makes these materials potentially viable, for example, for active packaging.

The aim of this work was the purification and organophilization on a pilot scale of two types of bentonite clay (green and grey) with nonionic surfactant, and their application in nanocomposites with a Polypropylene (PP) matrix. The bentonitic clays were purified and then organically modified with a non-ionic surfactant to become organophilic, being referred to as CPO and VPO respectively, and characterized by Particle Size Analysis by Laser Diffraction (AG), chemical analysis by X-Ray Fluorescence (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The results of AG and EDX showed significant reduction in the amount of sand and free silica in the form of quartz confirming that the clay was purified. The results of XRD and IR showed that the organophilization on pilot scale of the clays was successful. The composites containing 3phr of clay were characterized by XRD, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TG) and mechanical properties. XRD results indicated that for the PP/E-GMA/CPO system a nanocomposite with an intercalated structure was formed. As for the PP/E-GMA/VPO system, a micro-composite was obtained. DSC results indicated that CPO and VPO clays did not affect the melting temperature of PP. TG results indicated that the CPO and VPO clays improved the thermal stability of PP. PP/E-GMA/CPO system showed the highest thermal stability. The mechanical properties of PP were not significantly improved with the addition of clay and compatibilizer. However they were not deteriorated.

Pachekoski, Wagner Mauricio; Dalmolin, Carla; Agnelli, José Augusto Marcondes

Poly(hydroxybutyrate) - PHB - and poly(latic acid) - PLA - are thermoplastic polyesters with huge potential for industrial applications since they are fully biodegradable and can be processed by usual methods. However, due to their limited mechanical properties, they need to be modified to achieve better performance and become industrially competitive. The properties of both polymers and their mixtures were evaluated in order to investigate their application for thin films extrusion, for packages. PHB/PLA thin films were produced by extrusion and blow film techniques. To allow for an industrial production process, the preparation of the polymer blend should be changed in order to decrease their high adhesion during processing.

Lamy-Mendes, Alyne Cristina; Bindewald, Eduardo Henrique; Papi, Maurício Alberto Poletti; Marcolino-Jr, Luiz Humberto; Bergamini, Márcio Fernando

This manuscript describes the development of a sensitive and selective disposable potentiometric sensor based on doped polypyrrole films (PPy) for fluoride ions determination. The fluoride ions were incorporated in the PPy matrix during electrochemical polymerization under galvanostatic conditions on a composite electrode of ethylene vinyl acetate and black carbon. Experimental parameters involved in PPy film preparation, such as electric current densities, electric charge, pH and electrolyte concentration, were optimized in order to maximize the potentiometric response. The sensor response for fluoride ions was linear in the concentration range of 1.00 × 10- 5 to 1.08 × 10- 2 mol L- 1, with a slope of ~40 mV/pF, and it was sufficiently stable for several determinations. The method was successfully applied in the determination of fluoride ions in pharmaceutical commercial samples. Results demonstrated that the proposed sensor can be used as an interesting alternative to traditional analytical methods for fluoride ions.

This work studied the effects of the addition of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) to a PLLA matrix. Two distinct methods of preparation were employed: a combination of a solvent/ mechanical stirring and a combination of a solvent/high energy sonication. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were determined by nanoindentation and by the Vickers hardness test. Thermal properties of the nanocomposites (Tg, Tc, Tm and crystallinity degree) were determined by DSC. The tribological properties of the nanocomposites were determined by using a pin-on-disc apparatus. Mechanical and thermal properties did not present significant alterations, although tribological properties presented significant changes caused by the method of preparation and different loads. SEM images indicated that the wear mechanism was changed by the addition of MWCNT.
