Open-access Democratic school management through Gramsci’s vision

Abstract

This text presents results of bibliographic research, with a qualitative bias. Gramsci’s writings from his youth and maturity in prison were analyzed, as well as those of commentators, with a view to understanding how the management of the unitary school by the Sardinian communist was conceived. Considering that the management of the unitary school was not defined by Gramsci, we sought to infer this from what he produced textually and in his activism with the factory councils and political parties. It is concluded that the purpose of managing the unitary school is democratic, because it is defined by trying to collaborate with overcoming the historical division between those who are leaders and those who are directed by them, between those who govern and those who are governed by them, which is typical of class society, in a process that includes experiment on the “school floor”..
