From pedagogy as art to the arts of pedagogy

We intend to discuss pedagogy's particular condition to act upon subjects. We focus on one of the (contested) definitions of pedagogy: the one that understands it as art. We discuss this definition by showing that now, with cultural changes, the notion of the arts of pedagogy seems to rule. This notion may reveal a refinement occurring in the contemporary cultural status for subjects to look at themselves, shape their arts and endlessly work on themselves. We argue that thus a displacement of pedagogy as art emerges - in which there is the need of a educator-artist to shape subjects - for the arts of pedagogy, where everyone becomes his/her own teacher and acts on him/herself to produce distinct ways of life.

Pedagogy; pedagogy as art; arts of pedagogy; making subjects; cultural pedagogies
