Talking circles and research: reflections of an ethnographic approach

Abstract

This paper discusses the use of talking circles as technique in qualitative research in education by problematizing it vis-à-vis the incursions of ethnographic inspiration in urban peripheries. Regarding the proposed argumentation, interlocution is held with dwellers of Porto Alegre/RS-Brazil, by means of meetings at their homes between the 2014 and 2016. The contributions of Georg Simmel and Michel de Certeau were taken into consideration for reflections on the production of the “sociable talk” and on the popular “arts of saying”, respectively, proposing an interpretation of the dynamics of the conversation and of the form of narration. Therefore, regarding the deployed methodological course, the cultural flow of the “talk” stands out and, for the case under analysis, the dynamics of the coproduced talking circles are associated to the performance of those women within the neighborhood and, also, to a relational aesthetics in favor of reciprocity ties in their daily lives.
