Some trends and perspectives in articles published from 2009 to 2014 about deafness and deaf education

Abstract

This article presents the results of a literature review on Deafness and Deaf Education. Based on the articles published between 2009 and 2014 present in the SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) database, the analysis shows that the production on these subjects has increased steadily in the period, and that most of the articles were produced in the field of education, followed by Linguistic/Applied Linguistics, Health, Phonoaudiology, and Psychology. The study also identified a tendency to treat deafness as a linguistic specificity in an anthropological perspective. The majority of the articles discuss reading and writing whether as part of teaching and learning processes or as practices. Other frequent themes are bilingual education, deaf culture and identity, digital technologies, teaching practices in different subjects, translation and interpretation. Finally, the review shows a lack of studies on the deaf person in other contexts outside the classroom and the importance of research, teaching and extension initiatives carried in public universities for the strengthening of the field.
