The motivating factors which led to the adoption of environmental practices by the wood processing companies in the State of Sao Paulo

The objective of this study was to identify the environmental practices adopted by the wood processing companies in the State of Sao Paulo in the stage of generating and acquiring raw material, and to analyze the major motivating factors that led to the adoption of these practices. A qualitative study was carried out in 5 companies that produce wooden products for writing, cellulose and paper, or recycled corrugated fiberboard packaging. The research methodology adopted was case studies. Several interviews were conducted and documents were analyzed. It was observed that the environmental practices adopted by the majority of the studied companies refer to the consumption of wood and water, and to the pollution of the soil, air, and water. It was concluded that the major motivating factors for the adoption of environmental practices were: legislation, market regulation, and factors related to business competitiveness, such as the improvement of the environmental image and the possibility of costs reduction.
