  • Impact analysis of critical success factors on the benefits from statistical process control implementation Research Article

Soriano, Fabiano Rodrigues; Oprime, Pedro Carlos; Lizarelli, Fabiane Letícia

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract The Statistical Process Control - SPC is a set of statistical techniques focused on process control, monitoring and analyzing variation causes in the quality characteristics and/or in the parameters used to control and process improvements. Implementing SPC in organizations is a complex task. The reasons for its failure are related to organizational or social factors such as lack of top management commitment and little understanding about its potential benefits. Other aspects concern technical factors such as lack of training on and understanding about the statistical techniques. The main aim of the present article is to understand the interrelations between conditioning factors associated with top management commitment (Support), SPC Training and Application, as well as to understand the relationships between these factors and the benefits associated with the implementation of the program. The Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was used in the analysis since the main goal is to establish the causal relations. A cross-section survey was used as research method to collect information of samples from Brazilian auto-parts companies, which were selected according to guides from the auto-parts industry associations. A total of 170 companies were contacted by e-mail and by phone in order to be invited to participate in the survey. However, just 93 industries agreed on participating, and only 43 answered the questionnaire. The results showed that the senior management support considerably affects the way companies develop their training programs. In turn, these trainings affect the way companies apply the techniques. Thus, it will reflect on the benefits gotten from implementing the program. It was observed that the managerial and technical aspects are closely connected to each other and that they are represented by the ratio between top management and training support. The technical aspects observed through SPC application directly affect the benefits from the program.
  • Portfolio optimization using Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) and Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR) Research Article

Silva, Lucas Pelegrin da; Alem, Douglas; Carvalho, Flávio Leonel de

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract This paper investigates the efficiency of traditional portfolio optimization models when the returns of financial assets are highly volatile, e.g., in financial crises periods. We also develop alternative optimization models that combine the mean absolute deviation (MAD) and the conditional value at risk (CVaR), attempting to mitigate inefficient, low return and/or high-risk, portfolios. Three methodologies for estimating the probability of the asset’s historical returns are also compared. By using historical data on the Brazilian stock market between 2004 and 2013, we analyze the efficiency of the proposed approaches. Our results show that the traditional models provide portfolios with higher returns, but our propose model are able to generate lower risk portfolios, which might be more attractive in volatile markets. In addition, we find that models that do not use equiprobable scenarios produce better results in terms of return and risk.
  • A mixed integer programming approach for freight railcar distribution Research Article

Calado, Marcello; Barros, Júlio; Nobre, Ernesto; Prata, Bruno

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract The attendance of the demand for freight transport is related to the process of allocation of the wagons that in turn is associated with the way in which the decision is taken. The distribution of wagons to the shipment terminals depends on the planning as well as on movement of the empty wagons. In addition, the trips of the empty wagons have the major financial impact on the railroad system. In such a way, an efficient mechanism of wagon distribution is vital to the railroads, because it provides important operational profits and of costs. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the problem related to the distribution of the load wagons and to develop a mathematical model that can propose an optimal scheduling of the wagons.
  • Innovation as a new organizational function: evidence and characterization from large industrial companies in Brazil Research Article

Bagno, Raoni Barros; Salerno, Mario Sergio; Dias, Ana Valeria Carneiro

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Although innovation has acquired increasing importance for companies, achieving regular innovation capability imposes huge challenges for managers. Recent studies analyzed the experience of some large companies in setting up a dedicated team with the specific mission of conducting innovation management activities. Based on this analysis, innovation has been pointed to as a distinct and emerging organizational function. In this context, the central question posed in this study arises: what are the characteristics of such a function? Case studies were conducted in fifteen large industrial companies in Brazil that, except for two control cases, have established dedicated teams for innovation management activities. The analysis revealed key characteristics of the Innovation Function (IF), divided into six perspectives: general purpose, origins, legitimacy and guidance, people, assignments and future perspectives. The characterization of IF adds new elements to existing knowledge about how companies can build and maintain regular and systemic innovation capability.
  • Water distribution network segmentation based on group multi-criteria decision approach Research Article

Fontana, Marcele Elisa; Morais, Danielle Costa

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract A correct Network Segmentation (NS) is necessary to perform proper maintenance activities in water distribution networks (WDN). For this, usually, isolation valves are allocating near the ends of pipes, blocking the flow of water. However, the allocation of valves increases costs substantially for the water supply companies. Additionally, other criteria should be taking account to analyze the benefits of the valves allocation. Thus, the problem is to define an alternative of NS which shows a good compromise in these different criteria. Moreover, usually, in this type of decision, there is more than one decision-maker involved, who can have different viewpoints. Therefore, this paper presents a model to support group decision-making, based on a multi-criteria method, in order to support the decision making procedure in the NS problem. As result, the model is able to find a solution that shows the best compromise regarding the benefits, costs, and the decision makers' preferences.
  • Requirements processing for building design: a systematic review Research Article

Pegoraro, Camila; Paula, Istefani Carísio de

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Problems in buildings can often be traced back to the requirements processing in the design phases. In building design, requirements processing is mainly discussed under the term briefing and is a critical and a problematic process. This study focus on the design stage and aims to summarize and analyze requirements’ processing concepts and practices by a systematic review. The main problems, guidelines, tools and methods were analyzed and compared to the requirements engineering and management approaches. The findings indicate lack of consensus about key concepts and about the coverage of requirements processing, lack of applied methods and lack of practitioners’ knowledge. From the gaps, we proposed a definition for the key concepts, and scheme of this whole requirements processing in building design and indicate recommendations for future research, which can guide important contributions, especially if supported by practical experiences.
  • Power and culture in supply chains: contributions of the strategic action fields approach Research Article

Candido, Silvio Eduardo Alvarez; Soulé, Fernanda Veríssimo; Sacomano, Mário

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Important research efforts have been developed to account for power in the analysis of supply chains. This paper argues that further gains may arise by considering organizations as social constructions mediated not only by power relations, but also by cultural representations intrinsically intertwined to it. Its purpose is to discuss the dynamics of stability and change in supply chains based on the Strategic Action Fields (SAFs) approach. A theoretical essay was elaborated discussing some of the main implications of this perspective to the study of supply chains and presenting propositions to enable the construction of research objects and guide empirical studies in the area. Propositions emphasize how ongoing cultural-political relations circumscribed to different fields, including the organization, with its internal disputes.
  • Sustainable procurement portfolio management: a case study in a mining company Research Article

Mello, Tamires Magalhães de; Eckhardt, Daniel; Leiras, Adriana

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Sustainable procurement is a solution to integrate environmental and social considerations in all steps of procurement process, in order to reduce impacts on human health, environment, and human rights. Despite the existence of important works in this area, more studies for determining how the principles related to sustainable development can be integrated to procurement strategies are needed. This study presents a case study in a mining company to evaluate the elements that should be considered for the implementation of sustainability concept in the contracting of services through the application of a sustainability portfolio model. Results show that the contracts of the internal movement's category of the studied company fit as Strategic Commodity, which means that the items in this category have a risk in the strategic supply, because they need investments made by the buyer in the relationship with the supplier.

Bastos, Leonardo dos Santos Lourenço; Mendes, Matheus Lopes; Nunes, Denilson Ricardo de Lucena; Melo, André Cristiano Silva; Carneiro, Mariana Pereira

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Among all existing inventory replenishment models, this research was dedicated to the Joint Replenishment Problem (JRP), which consists in the replenishment of multiple items simultaneously, aiming total cost reduction. Literature has presented several optimal and approximated solutions to this problem, with different applications and techniques, which results in a large quantity of solution proposals. Therefore, this research aimed to map existing solutions to the problem in 2006-2015 in order to provide a guide for interested parts in JRP and to update previous reviews. Hence, systematic review was used to assess papers from that period interval. From a total of 128 papers, a general trend for seeking JRP extensions and practical applications was verified. Furthermore, the heuristic and metaheuristic methods were the most used and considered the most suitable due to their simplicity in understanding and application.
  • Grain intermodal terminals: evaluation of pure technical efficiency by Data Envelopment Analysis Research Article

Peixoto, Maria Gabriela Mendonça; Mendonça, Maria Cristina Angélico; Musetti, Marcel Andreotti; Batalha, Mario Otavio; Sproesser, Renato Luiz

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract This paper aimed to verify if terminals with productive efficiency also have pure technical efficiency, using DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) technique. The research approach was the qualitative-quantitative or mixed, with exploratory purpose; the research method defined was the case study (multicases); data were collected through interviews using a structured questionnaire and non-probability for convenience sampling. While the application of Charnes, Cooper and Rhodes (CCR) model observed that only three (4, 7 and 11), of the twelve analyzed Decision Making Units (DMUs) have total technical efficiency, through Banker, Charnes and Cooper (BCC) model, it was possible to observe that these terminals were the only ones with pure technical efficiency. The three inefficient DMUs (1, 2 and 12) showed pure technical efficiency, suggesting that these terminals might present probable scale operations’ inefficiency, aspect not addressed in this paper.

  • Success factors in the implementation of statistical process control: action research in a chemical plant Research Article

Toledo, Jose Carlos de; Lizarelli, Fabiane Letícia; Santana Junior, Manoel Bispo

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Despite the Statistical Process Control (SPC) be extensively explored in the literature, there are still difficulties in the implementation and maintenance, usually due to lack of attention to Critical Success Factors (CSF). This paper identified by literature review, critical factors that contribute to the success of the SPC and through an action research was implemented a control chart in a chemical plant using these factors. The attention to CSF during planning, implementation and the discussion with the process team resulted in the implementation and acceptance of control charts by the operational teams of the company, with continuing indications of use. The results enabled a framework to apply control charts based on CSF.

Etges, Ana Paula Beck da Silva; Souza, Joana Siqueira de; Kliemann Neto, Francisco José

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Risk is inherent to the activities of technology and innovation companies and to manage them represent an opportunity to improve the company capability to achieve its goals. The use of ERM models has been studied since the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission guides. This article adapted the MIGGRI model for the context of an innovation company from a TSP in Brazil. Using a case study and a review from previous ERM literature, the article show that is possible to measure the risks that an innovation company faces, and that they may be managed with a view to supporting a company’s strategy. Were applied an economic analysis based on a MCS and an indicator of CFaR were applied to measure innovation risks. A strategic performance model for innovation companies are proposed and the benefit to implement Risk Management practices in innovation organizations was validated.
  • Modeling Bayesian Networks from a conceptual framework for occupational risk analysis Research Article

Vieira, Elamara Marama de Araujo; Silva, Jonhatan Magno Norte da; Silva, Luiz Bueno da

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Occupational risk is the possibility that some element included in a particular work environment can cause damage to someone’s health. Thereby, the risk is understood as the product of probability and consequences. In this sense, risk analysis through probabilistic stochastic techniques, such as Bayesian networks (BN), becomes an important tool to analyze occupational risks. Thus, this article aims to show how BNs are being used in the field of occupational risk analysis, and to develop a conceptual framework for the construction of the BNs. Therefore, a systematic review analogous to the Statement for Reporting Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) protocol was performed, which allowed the evaluation of learning methods with the BN, building models and also for us propose a conceptual framework for the implementation of BNs in the analysis of occupational risks.
  • Risk of WMSDs in monofunctional and multifunctional workers in a Brazilian footwear company Research Article

Leite, Wilza Karla dos Santos; Silva, Luiz Bueno da; Souza, Erivaldo Lopes de; Fernandes, José Guilherme Barbosa; Colaço, Geraldo Alves

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract This study aimed to analyze the risk of musculoskeletal disorders in monofunctional and multifunctional workers in a footwear company. The sample comprised 114 workers in the shoe production sector. The method Occupational Repetitive Actions was used to assess the risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). Proportional odds models were constructed, relating the risk of WMSDs to the type of work and the worker’s level of multifunctionality. For monofunctional workers, exposure to the higher risk was related to cycle time and the technical actions within their activities, whereas for multifunctional workers, it was related to the range of motion, use of gloves and precision needed in activities. For monofunctional workers, greater risks were associated with a short activity cycle, whereas for multifunctional workers, they were associated with complementary and organizational factors. Moreover, workers whose intracellular activities were less than 30% of the total appeared to be less exposed to the risk of WMSDs.
  • Structuring front-end innovation activities throughout strategic product planning Research Article

Rodrigues, Thaisa; Braghini Junior, Aldo; Sola, Antonio Vanderley Herrero

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Strategic product planning (SPP) for new product development (NPD) in the front-end of innovation (FEI) is a great challenge for managers and practitioners. This article analyzes the structuring process of FEI activities during SPP. A research was carried out with 78 industries from both food and furniture in Brazil. Our study revealed that FEI activities are structured in an intricate network with a high level of complexity and interdependence. The large amount of activities and the complexity in structuring them denote that companies are concerned to reduce uncertainties and risks intensifying the planning phase.
  • Relationship between psychosocial factors and musculoskeletal disorders in footwear industry workers Research Article

Silva, Jonhatan Magno Norte da; Silva, Luiz Bueno da; Gontijo, Leila Amaral

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract This study evaluated the effects of psychosocial factors on the risk of WRMD symptoms in Brazilian footwear industry workers. The workers’ perceptions regarding psychosocial factors and frequency of body pain were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Logistic regression modeling was used to estimate the risk (Odds Ratio) of a worker more frequently exhibiting a symptom due to psychosocial factors. It was observed that some psychosocial factors, such as stress, contribute to WRMD in men, increasing the chance of symptoms in the knee (OR=3.07; p-value=0.036). In women, the ‘job dissatisfaction’ factor contributes to WRMD, increasing the chance of pain in the elbow (OR=4.83; p-value=0.007). It was concluded that a greater number of psychosocial factors influences the development of WRMD in male workers, although the effect these factors be discreet. In women, less psychosocial factors are related to WRMD, however its influence is very significant.
  • The establishment of the time interval between inspections for a cold standby system with component repair Research Article

Mendes, Angélica Alebrant; Ribeiro, José Luis Duarte

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract The time interval between inspections of cold standby systems is a crucial decision to ensure the appropriated system reliability and the lowest costs possible. This paper presents a model developed to establish the optimal time interval between inspections for a two-unit cold standby system with component repair and subject to periodic inspection, considering reliability and costs. A Markov chain is used to define possible states, their transition probabilities and the mean time to system failure, as a function of the time interval between inspections. Given the mean time to system failure, the steady state availability is determined. Finally, the costs related to the system maintenance are established and a cost function is developed and optimized for the time interval between inspections. Numerical examples are presented and results for different system parameters are compared. Besides optimizing the time interval between inspections, the analyses also reveal the effect of repair time on system availability and mean time to system failure.
  • A measurement model for managing performance of horizontal business networks and a research case Research Article

Bonatto, Franciele; Resende, Luis Mauricio Martins; Pontes, Joseane; Andrade Junior, Pedro Paulo de

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract A significant challenge facing companies that are members of collaborative networks are measuring their market performance, even as they evaluate their contribution to the development of the network. This paper develops a model for analyzing the performance measurement of horizontal business networks. We do this by reviewing literature related to performance management in horizontal networks and systematically selecting eight functional perspectives, and 25 operational factors associated with them, to measure the performance of both companies and the network. We employ the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for deciding perspective weights and use its quantitative results to create a diagram for representing the effectiveness of performance management at the company and network level. The model is tested by applying it to companies in an Information Technology business network. We analyze the results of the individual and network performance of the companies surveyed, along with the evaluative perspectives relevant to the network.
  • An optimisation approach for capacity planning: modelling insights and empirical findings from a tactical perspective Research Article

Carvalho, Andréa Nunes; Scavarda, Luiz Felipe; Oliveira, Fabricio

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract The academic literature presents a research-practice gap on the application of decision support tools to address tactical planning problems in real-world organisations. This paper addresses this gap and extends a previous action research relative to an optimisation model applied for tactical capacity planning in an engineer-to-order industrial setting. The issues discussed herein raise new insights to better understand the practical results that can be achieved through the proposed model. The topics presented include the modelling of objectives, the representation of the production process and the costing approach, as well as findings regarding managerial decisions and the scope of action considered. These insights may inspire ideas to academics and practitioners when developing tools for capacity planning problems in similar contexts.
  • How inventory consignment programs can improve supply chain performance: a process oriented perspective Research Article

Malhotra, Manoj K.; Mackelprang, Alan W.; Jayaram, Jayanth

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Inventory Consignment (IC) has largely been viewed as a method of shifting the ownership and cost burden of inventory from buyer to supplier to benefit the buyer. This primarily accounting based viewpoint has largely ignored process changes that can occur for both the buyer and supplier. This study addresses this gap in the extant literature by examining IC from a process perspective by specifically addressing: (1) the implementation issues in an IC program for both buyers and suppliers and (2) the financial and operational benefits from IC for both buyers and suppliers. Using the case study methodology, we examined three firms that had varying degrees of involvement and roles in IC programs. Based on our detailed work with these three firms and their supply chain linkages, we offer a series of propositions to demonstrate that IC is not just an accounting issue, but also a management practice that requires a series of process changes in order to be successful. These process changes in turn provide operational benefits for both buyers and suppliers via the mechanism of increased demand visibility to suppliers. Through this approach, this study makes a contribution beyond what has been examined in the prior literature which has mostly dealt with IC as an accounting based inventory management issue.

  • Coherence and transparency: some advice for qualitative researchers Research Article

    Coombs, Crispin

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract There is relatively little advice in the Engineering domain for undertaking qualitative studies. Researchers have to rely on generic guidance that may result in imprecise application of qualitative methods. A related discipline to Engineering is Information Systems (IS) and the experiences of the IS domain may provide some useful insights for undertaking qualitative studies. This paper synthesizes the guidance from the IS community for crafting high quality qualitative studies and manuscripts. It reports on five themes: i) Establishing philosophical underpinnings; ii) Clarifying theoretical aims; iii) Selecting qualitative methods; iv) Demonstrating rigour in qualitative data analysis; and v) Grappling with generalisation. The review stresses the importance of coherence and transparency for crafting qualitative research manuscripts and provides a list of reflective questions for qualitative research design.

The links between university and industry are likely to contribute towards such direction, notably as a starting point for institutions and industries to foster their student’s competences, aiming their aptitude for an ever-competitive job market, which values the flexible, creative being, who is capable of creating innovative solutions.
  • Assessing the service quality in Software-as-a-Service from the customers’ perspective: a methodological approach and case of use Research Article

Freitas, André Luís Policani; Freitas Neto, Michelle Maria

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Despite the advances in the evaluation of the quality of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), new studies seem to be necessary, since the existing criticisms concerning the SERVQUAL scale and the lack of studies concerning the use of SERVPERF for this purpose. This work aims to fulfil this gap by proposing a methodological approach to assess the SaaS service quality by measuring SaaS customers’ satisfaction. Factor analysis is used to summarize the information contained in the original items into a smaller set of new dimensions and Quartile analysis is suggested to determine the most critical items. By conducting a study, the factors that most influence customer’s satisfaction are customer service, customer assistance and the reliability of SaaS. Most of the critical items are associated with the transparency and accuracy in correcting errors, the company's interest in solving customer problems, SaaS application's ability to meet business requirements, implemented updates and regularity of service performance.

Afterwards, the conceptual framework was built for PSS characterization considering business model, engineering and design aspects that may be useful to guide PSS solutions development. The paper aims to make a theoretical contribution by understanding what should be done and how to perform the activities during PSS life cycle at a systemic level.
  • Proposal of a model for sales and operations planning (S&OP) maturity evaluation Research Article

Pedroso, Carolina Belotti; Calache, Lucas Daniel Del Rosso; Lima Junior, Francisco Rodrigues; Silva, Andrea Lago da; Carpinetti, Luiz César Ribeiro

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract A successful S&OP implementation can bring many benefits to organizations, and after its implementation, the S&OP process can evolve and reach higher levels of maturity. Considering that, only through a measurement system, goals and benefits can be achieved, thus, it is essential to assess S&OP maturity level. Many papers on literature adopt a quantitative perspective on S&OP, but just few of them deal with uncertainty present in S&OP decision-making, such as maturity model assessment process that carries subjectivity and uncertainty. Thus, this study proposes a decision making model based on fuzzy theory to evaluate and to categorize S&OP maturity levels and to suggest strategies to increase S&OP maturity. A pilot application was conducted in two manufacturing organizations that have implemented the S&OP process. The results, according to the performance presented, suggest different actions must be taken in terms of ensuring enablers to S&OP implementation.
