Abstract
Through the concept of racial device (Carneiro, 2023), - as a structuring element of the social field - and the constitution of the subject - as formulated in Lacanian theory - we intend to reflect in this text on the formation of Brazilian subjectivity and, more specifically, on the production of illness and psychological suffering among the black population. In parallel, we will try to point out the concept of the radical ethics of listening (Silva, 2019) and the concept of self-care (from the perspective of Carneiro, 2023, based on Foucault, 2002) as tools and strategies for coping with the subjective feelings produced by racism and socio-economic inequality. In this way, we intend to highlight the importance of thinking about public mental health policies in light of the centrality of issues of race, gender, class, and territory in the social organization of Brazil and in the production of subjectivity, suffering, but also alternatives and solutions.
