WOMEN IN CRIME: ANALYSIS ON STATEMENTS SPREAD BY THE BRAZILIAN MEDIA

Abstract

Women's emancipation movements in the course of the 20th century led to the conquest of rights and the occupation of social spaces. Crime is one of those social spaces, and will be the object of analysis of this article. This theoretical and documentary study seeks to identify the media’s statements about women judged as criminals or who are subject to judicial investigation. In the theoretical portion of our study, we sought to understand the social function of media and the gender prerogatives disseminated by it. In the second portion, we sought to identify in public domain documents (newspapers and national magazines) how the media reports and depicts women involved in crime. At the end of our research, we noted how the reports on women in crime contribute to the institutionalization of prescriptive gender models. However, these same statements produce unpredictable effects, such as the imprecision of the boundaries of genders, which highlight the multiple possibilities of existence.
