MAKING VIOLENCE A NOUN: THE PERSPECTIVE OF STUDENTS OF A PUBLIC SCHOOL

Abstract

This article summarizes the results of a Master's thesis built in the context of a Psychology extension project to prevent violence in public schools. As part of the project team in one of the schools, the authors use the psychosocial perspective of violence to investigate how students from 6th to 9th grade of elementary school understand violence and how it is present in school from their perspective. Through the Participatory-Action Research method, the authors promoted collective discussions, class assemblies and the organization of posters in trios of students, asking the question: "what is violence?". The posters and field diaries produced by the team were analyzed, and the types of violence present in the students' reports were extracted, as well as indicators of what these experiences meant to them. Results show the instrumental value of violence, naturalization of aggression and disbelief in the way school addresses these issues.
