The socio-medical constitution of the "ADHD fact"

This article analyzes how the recent neurobiological explanation of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD reveals only the most superficial level of the constitution of the "ADHD fact". The "harmonic phase" of the constitution of ADHD diagnosis is investigated, and the psychiatric gaze which it reinforces - one that is grounded on the risk philosophy and on the apparent self-evidence of cerebral imaging technologies. The objective is to investigate moral, social, and scientific contingencies that took and take part in the constitution of ADHD and the identity models that this diagnosis strengthens and supports. ADHD must be analysed as an empiric and social object, in the specific epistemic and social spaces in which it arose.
