REFLECTIONS ON ALCOHOL USE AMONG QUILOMBOLA YOUTH

Abstract

This study investigates the meanings of alcohol use among youngsters of two quilombola communities named Castainho and Estivas located at Garanhuns/PE. This is developed in three stages. Firstly, we conducted participant observation. Secondly, we conducted 20 semi-structured interviews with youngsters(18-24 years). Finally, the data was analyzed from a critical discourse analysis and the intersectionality of gender, generation, social class and race/ethnicity. The intersectional perspective led us to consider the diversity of frames that social differentiation markers engender and the meanings and effects of alcohol use. We saw that those meanings are diverse. The conditions of existence marked by gender relations, absence of several leisure activities, prejudice suffered for being black and/or quilombolas are situations which, in an interseccional manner, in alcohol use, and historical, and historical inequalities that compromise the quality of life of this population.
