THE MEANINGS OF WORK FOR PEOPLE WITH ACQUIRED DISABILITIES

ABSTRACT

Considering both the work may have great impact on daily life and the fact that a person is psychosocially affected in an unparalleled way when he or she acquires a disability, this research aims to comprehend the meanings of work for those people. The study was carried out with 13 people with acquired disability who were working before the disability (physical, hearing, or visual) and who stayed in the work market.. The instrument used was an interview which were transcribed and analyzed through method of content analysis. Six thematic categorization of meanings of work were identified (a) distraction, occupation and execution of activities, (b) independence and survival, (c) pleasure and satisfaction, (d) fulfillment of life, (e) utility and (f) self appreciation. The main contribution was to understand subjective aspects related to work for people with acquired disability. Future research should be made to deep these comprehensions.
