Laity and Synodality

ABSTRACT

This article in the field of systematic pastoral theology aims to reflect on the possibilities of incorporating laity into the synodal experience. It first draws on Pope Francis’ proposals for a Synod about synodality, and then for the conditions required for the laity to become active subjects in the synodal process. Thirdly, it recalls the experience of the Latin American Ecclesial Assembly to point out both its achievements and limitations. The final part discusses pending challenges. The novelty of the article lies in raising the difficulties for an effective incorporation of the laity in the synodal process. It concludes that, without structural reforms, it will be difficult to attain an authentic synodality that incorporates the laity as mature members of the ecclesial community.
