Narcissism and suicide: the problem of the ideal in the psychotic experience

Narcissism, one of the most important concepts of the psychoanalytical theory, but also extremely complex, is used for the study of suicide. At this work it is attempted to precise the differences between primary narcissism and secondary narcissism related to Freud's text which presents serious difficulties articulating them to the ideal instances of the psychism, Ideal ego and Ego ideal which have a relevant role on the conflict that leads the individual to suicide. Through a clinical story, it is demonstrated, in cases of psychotic patients, how the suicide act represents a recovery of self-esteem through a search of one flawless coincidence with the Ideal Ego, which replaces the subject in the position of Ego ideal, harmonizing with a more primitive type of psychotic performance, therefore closer of a primary narcissism model.
