The participation of elderly women in third age universities: reasons that lead people and changes that took place

The third age universities declare as objectives to promote health, psychological and social well-being and the elderly citizenship. The present study aimed to analyze the reasons that led elderly women to participate of the Third Age University (UNITI/UFRGS) and the changes caused by their participation. The sample consisted of 103 elderly women that answered questions about sociodemographic, their reasons to participate of UNITI and the changes caused by their participation. The sampling process used was the convenience method. The results showed that the reasons that led elderly women to participate of the Third Age University were the search for new knowledge, new friendships, a new sense of life, occupation of their free time and leisure. The participation in this program helped them to reduce the feeling of sadness and increase their self-esteem. They also felt happier and found a new meaning for their lives. The study indicates that the universities of the third age come positively contributing for the well-being of elderly people, acting as a possible predictor of a well-succeeded aging.
