“Seven-headed beast”: experiences of communities affected by the Itá dam

Abstract

This research reconstruct the experiences of rural communities affected by the construction of Itá dam, in Southern Brazil. Data was collected by means of participant research with 43 interviewees and document analysis of the hydroelectric plant, and later underwent thematic analysis. Participants defined the Itá dam as a “seven-headed beast” that have terrorized the affected cities for years, poisoned and killed people, animals, and plants, revealing that its implantation was characterized by experiences of violence, insecurity, and lack of information, political and social support. In face of the damage generated by the construction, those communities had to fight precariously by themselves to guarantee their most basic rights, experiencing important identity and cultural breakdowns, and mental health issues.
