The limits of Klein’s concept of reparation and the Lacanian anthropophagy in contemporary art

Abstract

This article discusses Klein’s theoretical elaborations on reparation, especially Mignon Nixon, a critique of his works in the field of contemporary art. Nixon understands that, today, an anthropophagy of the concepts focused on Lacan’s symbolic register is needed, in other words, it is a critique of his own work by returning Klein’s theorizations to the field of art. This return to Klein based on criticism of Lacan’s teaching raises questions and demands careful reflection. As we intend to indicate in this article, such a proposal creates problems and a deadlock within its own theoretical framework, especially with regard to creation linked to reparation. In addition, we try to indicate theoretical aspects present in Lacan, such as the death drive, jouissance, lalangue, that could address the issues raised by Nixon.
