Love thy neighbor as thyself: religious intolerance from a psychoanalytic perspective

Abstract

Based on psychoanalysis’ concept of subject, this paper investigates the articulations between religious intolerance and the construction of the subject’s identity. For this purpose, the article reviews the idea of narcissism, Freud’s considerations on religious involvement and Lacan’s contributions to the discussion of religion, demonstrating how theoretical elaborations materialize throughout history and their resonances in the contemporary. In this regard, the text highlights the articulation between religious identification and political position.
