Study of adsorption/desorption of herbicide 2,4D in soil Vieira, Eny Maria Prado, Alexandre Gustavo Soares do Landgraf, Maria Diva Rezende, Maria Olímpia de Oliveira

Abstract in English:

The herbicides are being used in huge quantities for various porpouses. Once the herbicide finds its way into the environment, a major part of it comes in contact with soil. Humic substances are major organic constituents of soil. These substances may interact with herbicides in different modes and adsorption is probably the most important one. Adsorption will control the quantity of herbicide in the soil solution, and determines its persistence, leaching, mobility and bioavailability. In this work we studied the interaction between the herbicide 2,4D and soil in the presence and absence of organic matter. The methodology utilized for the determination of 2,4D was gas chromatography with eletron capture detector. The behavior of 2,4D was evaluated through Freundlich isotherms. It was verified that the herbicide 2,4D has a large adsorption in the humic acid .

Calorimetric study on the interaction of alcohols with Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Sc) Silva Filho, Eloi A. Volpe, Pedro L. O.

Abstract in English:

The calorimetric experiments based on technique breaking ampoule were carried out by measuring of the heat of solution of alcohol in isotonic solution (NaCl 0.10 M) and alcohol in suspension of Sc at 298 K. From these data the enthalpy of interaction alcohol with suspension of Sc (DtrsH°) was calculate by Hess law. In this study, the results indicate that the enthalpy of interaction of aliphatic alcohol (C2-C8) with suspensions of Sc is a process exothermic and becomes more exothermic with increasing of -CH2 group of alcohol in range -1,14 to -4,0 kJ.mol-1. We concluded that enthalpy of interaction shows a linear relationship with increasing of alcohol's lipophilicity, in agreement with Traube's rule.

Voltammetric study of complex of copper (II) with alizarin red S ligand, absorbed on surface of pyrolytic graphite electrode Mouchrek Filho, Victor E. Chierice, Gilberto O. Marques, Aldaléa L. B.

Abstract in English:

The alizarin red S (ARS) has been used as a spectrophotometric reagent of several metals for a long time. Now this alizarin has been used as modifier agent of electrodes, for voltammetric analyses. In this work cyclic voltammetry experiments was accomplished on closed circuit, with the objective of studying the voltammetric behavior of alizarin red S adsorbed and of its copper complex, on the surface of the pyrolytic graphite electrode. These studies showed that ARS strongly adsorbs on the surface of this electrode. This adsorption was used to immobilize ions copper(II) from the solution.

Estimating the value of the metal-ligand bond dissociation enthalpy<D> (M-L) for adducts using empirical equations supported by TG data Farias, Robson Fernandes

Abstract in English:

In this work is presented and tested (for 106 adducts, mainly of the zinc group halides) two empirical equations supported in TG data to estimate the value of the metal-ligand bond dissociation enthalpy for adducts: <D> (M-O) = t i / g if t i < 420 K and <D> (M-O) = (t i / g ) - 7,75 . 10-2 . t i if t i > 420 K. In this empirical equations, t i is the thermodynamic temperature of the beginning of the thermal decomposition of the adduct, as determined by thermogravimetry, andg is a constant factor that is function of the metal halide considered and of the number of ligands, but is not dependant of the ligand itself. To half of the tested adducts the difference between experimental and calculated values was less than 5%. To about 80% of the tested adducts, the difference between the experimental (calorimetric) and the calculated (using the proposed equations) values are less than 15%.

Íon BeH+ on intense eletric field Righi, Assis Francisco Moro Kuhnen, Carlos Alberto

Abstract in English:

The influence of a strong external electric field in chemical bonding is not extensively studied. In this work, the behavior of the potential energy curves of the BeH+ ion in an external electric field is investigated by means of variational calculations using molecular orbitals. For simplicity we consider the case where the external field is parallel to the molecular axis, in the direction of the dipole moment, which raises the polarization of the ion. The effects on dissociation are investigated.

Chemometric evaluation of the heavy metal distribution in compost of domiciliary urban garbage Egreja Filho, Fernando Barboza Reis, Efraim Lázaro Jordão, Cláudio Pereira Pereira Neto, João Tinoco

Abstract in English:

The main obstacle to the use of compost from urban waste in agriculture is the presence of heavy metals. Once in the soil, their effect is accumulative and they may contaminate crops and water. The present study reports the evaluation of the chemical distributions of Cu, Pb, Mn and Zn in three different sized fractions (unsieved, < 1,18mm and > 1,18mm) of compost, by means of a sequencial extraction procedure and a chemometric analysis of the total content of all metals in each fraction. The pattern recognition methods showed significant differences in total heavy metal contents for the different fractions. The finest one was the most contaminated. Meanwhile, this fraction presented lower amounts of metals in avaliable forms. This behavior can be attributed to the presence of metal particles in their elemental states in this fraction.

Potentiometric method for copper determination in sugarcane spirit Küchler, Ivo L. Silva, Fernando Antônio M.

Abstract in English:

'Cachaça' is the Brazilian name for the spirit obtained from sugarcane. According to Brazilian regulations, it may be sold raw or with addition of sugar and may contain up to 5 mg/L of copper. Copper in "cachaça" was determined by titration with EDTA, using a homemade copper membrane electrode for end-point detection. It was found a pooled standard deviation of 0,057 mg/L and there was no significant difference between the results obtained by the potentiometric method and by flame atomic absorption spectrometry with standard addition. Among the 21 'cachaça' samples from 16 different brands analyzed, three overpassed the legal copper limit. For its characteristics of accuracy, precision, and speed, the potentiometric method may be employed advantageously in routine analysis, specially when low cost is a major concern.

Thermochemistry at Unicamp: testimony of a 25 year journey Chagas, Aécio Pereira Airoldi, Claudio

Abstract in English:

This article describes the progress of a group of investigation on thermochemistry, which started in 1972. A homemade calorimeter was employed to provide quantitative support to the information on interative effect between lanthanide cations and halides or pseudohalides, in non-aqueous solvents, previously derived from conductometric titrations. However, the features of this instrument were not able to detect the thermal effects. Therefore, the great input to the group came from the acquisition of an LKB commercial apparatus, by the University in 1975. Considering the historical development of the coordination chemistry in Brazil, which was previously dedicated to strutural features of adducts, without focusing the energetic envolved in any coordinationcompound. Since starting the thermochemistry study, numerous masters and doctoral thesis covering more than a hundred adducts and a reasonable number of chelates, were presented systematizing data in order to understand the behavior of this kind of coordination compounds (C. Airoldi and A. P. Chagas, Coord. Chem. Rev. 1992, 119, 29). This knowledge enabled an extension of the study to include some heterogeneous systems formed by natural or synthetic materials like immobilized silica gel, lamellar phosphate, phosphonate or sulphate compounds, clays, polysaccharides, chrysotile, soils, etc. Many students are now engaged as staff members in Universities, Research Instituitions or other private institutions, developing many activities. Due to a multiplying effect on the formation of researchers, the group is now reaching the fourth generation.
