Calcium phosphate biomaterials from marine algae. Hydrothermal synthesis and characterisation Felício-Fernandes, G. Laranjeira, Mauro C. M.

Abstract in English:

Calcium phosphate compounds such as Hydroxyapatite (HAp) were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis with phycogenic CaCO3 as starting material. Material obtained was characterised by usual methods (XRD, FTIR, TG, N2-adsorption, SEM and EDX) in order to study its physical-chemical characteristics. The prepared HAp showed that it may be suitable for use as a biomaterial.

Evaluation of the salt accumulation process in water resources in the Brazilian semi - arid area by ICP-- AES Santos, José Soares dos Oliveira, Elisabeth de Massaro, Sérgio

Abstract in English:

The salt accumulation process in some reservoirs of regular and irregular use (from 10 to 50 years of constrution), located in the Southeast of Bahia State was evaluated. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry was used to evaluate the concentrations of Na, K, Ca and Mg in water samples from inside and upstream of the reservoirs. The results showed that for reservoirs of irregular use, the salt accumulation, indicated by the tracer Na, increases with the age of the reservoirs, however for the reservoirs of regular use the hydraulic retention time is the main parameter.

Determination of carbaryl by ELISA (Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) and HPLC with photodiode array detection Toscano, Ilda A. S. Ribeiro, M. Lúcia Rocha, Julio C. Nunes, Gilvanda S. Barceló, Damiá

Abstract in English:

ELISAs have been applied to pesticide residue analysis due to their high sensitivity and selectivity. However, some ELISAs performance may be affected by matrix components. In this work, ELISA for carbaryl in water samples was checked for interference by naturally occurring fulvic acids. The results suggested that the high fulvic acid concentration (<FONT FACE=Symbol>ž³</FONT>30 mg L-1) and acidic pH conditions (pH 4.0) interfere with the signal detection decreasing the method sensitivity. A dilution of the samples and adjust to pH 8.0 are appropriate to minimize the matrix interferences in the ELISA method. Good correlation between ELISA and HPLC-DAD results was observed.

Adsorption of zinc and cadmium on peat columns Petroni, Sérgio Luis Graciano Pires, Maria Aparecida Faustino Munita, Casimiro Sepúlveda

Abstract in English:

The aim of this work was to evaluate the adsorption conditions of zinc and cadmium ions from aqueous solutions using a comercially available peat from Balneário Arroio do Silva, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Adsorption studies were carried out in column experiments using radiotracers of the studied metals (65Zn and 115Cd). The pH influence and the interference of other ions, such as Na+, Ca2+, Fe3+ and Al3+on the adsorption process were investigated. The results showed that peat columns are able to retain more than 99% of metal ions in solution in a range of pH from 3,7 to 6,5. Ca2+ and Al3+ ions were the main interferent on adsorption of Zn and Cd ions in solution.

Electrolytic dissolution for constituents determination in tool steels by ICP-AES Gervasio, Ana Paula G. Reis, Boaventura Freire dos Giné, Maria Fernanda Bergamin Filho, Henrique

Abstract in English:

Different methods have been applied to solve special problems of metal analysis. First, the solid samples of tool steels were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence. Alternatively, an on-line electrodissolution implemented in a flow injection system and conventional dissolution procedure for determination of W, Mo, V and Cr in tool steels by ICP-AES is described. The resulting analyte solutions were compared with conventional dissolution procedure and determination by ICP-AES. The electrolytic procedure presented a good performance characterized by a sample throughput of 164 determinations per hour. Results were in agreement with those obtained by conventional acid dissolution.

The use of organofuntionalized silica gel as sequestrating agent for metals Airoldi, Claudio Farias, Robson Fernandes de

Abstract in English:

An overview about the homogeneous and heterogeneous methods of synthesizing silylating agents and applications of the organofunctionalized silica-gel samples was explored. The pendant molecules attached covalently to the inorganic surface displayed important properties to act as sequestrating agents for metals in aqueous and non-aqueous solutions. The large variety of basic centres anchored on organic molecules improve the capacity in adsorbing cations. The increase in adsorption is dependent on the number of basic atoms disposed on the pendant molecules on the surface. The combination of acidic and basicity properties favours the selectivity, such is exemplified by the thiol modified silicas towards mercury (II) cations.

New trends for treatment of industrial effluents containing organochloride species Freire, Renato Sanches Pelegrini, Ronaldo Kubota, Lauro T. Durán, Nelson Peralta-Zamora, Patrício

Abstract in English:

The toxic character of organochloride compounds, their habitual presence in many industrial effluents, and mainly the low efficiency of the current remediation processes, are important aspects that have been promoted to study new degrading technologies. Among the great number of new physical and chemical alternatives, the photochemical and electrochemical processes have been played an important role, mainly due to their high degradation capacity through relatively low-cost procedures. In these contexts biological processes, the use of white-rot fungi, or even ligninolytic enzymes produced from them, are also very promising alternatives. However, the necessity of long reaction time and the high cost of the enzyme production process are some of the drawbacks that difficult the definitive consolidation of these processes.

Fuel cell technology Wendt, Hartmut Götz, Michael Linardi, Marcelo

Abstract in English:

The fuel cell principle was discovered by Sir Grove 150 years ago. However material problems prohibited its commercialization for a long time. A change has been occurring during the last 30 years, so two types of fuel cell technologies can be distinguished: low and high temperature operation cells. Nowadays, only phosphoric acid cells are commercially offered as 200 kWel power plants. Membrane cells are more suitable for automobile electrotraction with a very low (or no) environmental impact. The fuel continues, however, to play a very particular role, since hydrogen is not easy to store and to transport. The more promising target is the utilization of liquid methanol. The Brazilian scenario concerning this kind of technology is discussed.

Evaluation of the use of chemometric methods in soil analysis Sena, Marcelo M. de Poppi, Ronei J. Frighetto, Rosa T. S. Valarini, Pedro J.

Abstract in English:

One of the major interests in soil analysis is the evaluation of its chemical, physical and biological parameters, which are indicators of soil quality (the most important is the organic matter). Besides there is a great interest in the study of humic substances and on the assessment of pollutants, such as pesticides and heavy metals, in soils. Chemometrics is a powerful tool to deal with these problems and can help soil researchers to extract much more information from their data. In spite of this, the presence of these kinds of strategies in the literature has obtained projection only recently. The utilization of chemometric methods in soil analysis is evaluated in this article. The applications will be divided in four parts (with emphasis in the first two): (i) descriptive and exploratory methods based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA); (ii) multivariate calibration methods (MLR, PCR and PLS); (iii) methods such as Evolving Factor Analysis and SIMPLISMA; and (iv) artificial intelligence methods, such as Artificial Neural Networks.

Conductivimetric determination of residual carbonate from lime amended soil using flow analysis Kawazaki, Lilka Isuzu Miyazawa, Mario Pavan, Marcos Antonio Franchini, Julio Cezar

Abstract in English:

The objective of this study was to evaluate a flow injection system for determination of residual CO3(2-) in soil amended with lime material. It was used a closed system were the CO2 released from soil sample acidified with 0.5 mol L-1 HCl was capted in a 0.2 mol L-1 NaOH solution. After 16h the capted CO2 was determined by conductivimetry using a flow injection system. The results obtained by the proposed method were significantly correlated with those reported in soil samples used by the International Soil Analytical Exchange Programe. The regression equation was: y = 0.987x -- 0.075 r = 0.996, P > 0.01. For acid soils amended with CaCO3 the method showed a deviation error of 2.7%, detection limit was 0.077 mmol kg-1 of CO3(2-), and a recovery of 99.7% of the total CO3(2-) added in soil sample. The method was easily adapted for routine determination of residual CO3(2-) in soil samples with an analytical frequency of 40 samples per hour.

Determination of the E-Z fumaric and maleic acids configuration. An experiment designed to develop scientific research abilities in undergraduates students Bustos, Carlos Salgado, Guillermo Martínez, Rolando Carrière, François

Abstract in English:

In this work we intend to eliminate the idea that laboratory exercises seem like cookbooks. That is, exercises shall be presented as a problematic situation. Based on observation and experimentation, the students should determine the E-Z configuration of maleic and fumaric acids. The basis of this laboratory exercise is the acid-catalyzed isomerization of maleic acid to fumaric acid. Students are given the starting material, reagents and the experimental procedure. They are told that the starting material is a dicarboxylic acid containing a C=C double bond of formula C4H4O4. Students determine melting points, solubilities, acidity and chromatographic patterns for both the starting material and the product, so that a configuration of each acid can be proposed. This type of experiment yields excellent results, because the students are left to deduce that maleic acid is less stable than fumaric acid. Additionally, they conclude that maleic acid is the "Z" isomer and fumaric acid is the "E" isomer. Finally, this laboratory exercise allows the students to develop simultaneously their critical-thinking skills with the respective laboratory techniques and not to see chemistry as recipes to be followed.
