Artigo Use of classical analytical methods to investigate the authenticity of copaiba oil Vasconcelos, Antônio Francisco Fernandes de Godinho, Oswaldo Espirito Santo Abstract in English: The acidity and ester index are suggested, as simple and cheap methods, adequate to be employed in the study of the authenticity of copaíba oil by small drugstores and export firms. The acidity index permits both the detection and the evaluation of the content of adulteration of copaíba oil. The ester index permits to know if the adulterant either contain ester compounds,as the case of fatty oils, or contain only non saponifiable compounds as is the case of ethyl alchool or mineral oil. The results of the aplication of the methods to eight commercial samples, of copaiba oil, where three samples were adultered, are coherent with those obtained by more sophisticated instrumental methods. |
Artigo QSPR study on partition coefficients: quantum-mechanical descriptors and multivariate analysis Borges, Edilson Grünheidt Takahata, Yuji Abstract in English: Quantum chemistry and multivariate analysis were used to estimate the partition coefficients between n-octanol and water for a serie of 188 compounds, with the values of the q 2 until 0.86 for crossvalidation test. The quantum-mechanical descriptors are obtained with ab initio calculation, using the solvation effects of the Polarizable Continuum Method. Two different Hartree-Fock bases were used, and two different ways for simulating solvent cavity formation. The results for each of the cases were analised, and each methodology proposed is indicated for particular case. |
Artigo Preparation of LiNbO3 AND LiNbO3:Eu3+ by the polymeric precursors method Souza, Luciana A. Messaddeq, Younès Ribeiro, Sidney J. L. Fredericci, Catia Lanciotti Jr., Francesco Pizani, Paulo S. Abstract in English: The ferroelectric compound LiNbO3 was prepared by the polymeric precursors method in the polycrystalline form containing different concentrations of Eu3+. The compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, vibrational and electronic spectroscopy. Electronic spectroscopy was shown to be sensitive to small concentrations of contaminating phases allowing a good control of the compound purity. The presence of Eu3+ ions leads to the formation of the LiNb3O8 phase in the range of 500 to 800 °C. Above this temperature range LiNbO3 and tetragonal (T') EuNbO4 were obtained. |
Artigo Ethyl carbamate in alcoholic beverages (cachaça, tiquira, whisky and grape) Andrade-Sobrinho, Luiz Gualberto de Boscolo, Maurício Lima-Neto, Benedito dos Santos Franco, Douglas Wagner Abstract in English: The presence of ethyl carbamate in cachaças, tiquiras, whiskies and grapes was investigated by GC-MS, monitoring the m/z 62 ion. The external standard method was used for quantitation in 188 samples (126 cachaças, 37 tiquiras, 6 grappas and 19 whiskies). The results of the study for cachaça were analysed considering the geographic origin, distillation type (still or column), bottle coloration (amber or transparent) and ageing. The average contents of ethyl carbamate in cachaças and tiquiras were 0.77 and 2.4 mg L-1, respectively. These values were higher than the mean concentration found in grapes (0.045 mg L-1) and whiskies (0.14 mg L-1). On average the cachaças distilled in column tend to present higher values of ethyl carbamate than those from still. In the sampling studied it was not possible to define a correlation between content of ethyl carbamate, bottle coloration and ageing time. |

The sorbed elements were subsequently eluted and a fifty-fold, ten-fold and ten-fold preconcentration factor for to Zn, Cu and Mn were obtained, respectively. |
Artigo Citrus seed oils extractions and their activity against leaf cutting ant Atta sexdens and its symbiotic fungus Fernandes, João B. David, Valmir Facchini, Patrícia H. Silva, M. Fátima das G. F. da Rodrigues Filho, Edson Vieira, Paulo C. Galhiane, Mário S. Pagnocca, Fernando C. Bueno, Odair C. Hebling, M. José Victor, Sandra R. Santos, Ana Maria Rodrigues dos Abstract in English: Seeds Citrus oils (C. sinensis, C. limon and C. reticulata) extraction with hexane in a soxhlet apparatus and through supercritical fluid (CO2) were done. Besides triglycerides, the oils obtained with hexane comprised volatile compounds such as terpenes and fatty alcohols, esters, and aldehydes. However, the oils obtained by extraction with supercritical fluid presented only triglycerides. These results indicate that the extraction using supercritical fluid presents better selectivity. The activity of the oils on the development of the ant symbiotic fungus, Leucoagaricus gongylophorus, showed week activity and the topic insecticide assay showed better activity for the tangerine seed oil. |
Artigo Analisys of glucocorticosteroids by GC-MS: a new approach of derivatization step for doping control in sport Pereira, Henrique M. G. Marques, Marlice A. S. Cardoso, Jarí N. Aquino Neto, Francisco R. Abstract in English: Glucocorticosteroids (CT) show a powerful anti-inflammatory effect. In view of this, they are extensively used in sports medicine, but their misuse (systemic administration) can lead to severe injuries on athletes and has been restricted by the IOC in recent years. For GC-MS analysis, a derivatization step is necessary in order to convert them to a stable form, thus preventing thermal breakdown with the loss of the ketone side chain. Derivatization of CT is reviewed and a new approach of silylation is presented for screening of CT in urine. |
Artigo Metal distribution and characterization of exchange constants between metal species and aquatic humic fractions with different molecular sizes Araújo, Adriana Barbosa Rosa, André Henrique Rocha, Julio Cesar Romão, Luciane Pimenta Cruz Abstract in English: In this work the metal distribution and exchange constants between metal species and aquatic humic fractions with different molecular sizes were studied. The aquatic humic substances (AHS) were extracted by XAD-8 resin from water sample collected from Itapitanguí river, São Paulo State, Brazil. The AHS were fractionated in six fractions with different molecular sizes (>100 - <5 kDa) and characterized by several techniques. Molar ratios H/C suggested higher aromaticity for fractions F1 and F6 whereas molar ratios C/N didn´t show any differences regarding the humification degree between the fractions. The UV-Vis absorbance a254/a436 ratio showed higher results for F4 and F5, probably by less condensed features. FTIR studies showed high similarity in the functional groups in the fractions. The highest percentage of traces of Co, Al, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and Ni (determined by ICP-AES) was preferably complexed by fractions F3 and F4 with a greater amount of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). In addition, the exchange constants, determined by ultrafiltration method, showed complexes AHS-Fe and AHS-Al with higher stability than complexes AHS-Co in all fractions. |
Revisão Pharmacological strategies for anti-HIV therapy Peçanha, Emerson Poley Antunes, Octavio A. C. Tanuri, Amilcar Abstract in English: The replicative cycle of HIV presents several events. The proteins involved in these events can be anticipated as pharmacological targets, aiming to the development of anti viral agents. Presently, there are fifteen commercially available anti-HIV drugs, which act at substrate binding site of reverse transcriptase (zidovudine, didanosine, zalcitabine, stavudine, lamivudine and abacavir), at a non-substrate binding site of reverse transcriptase (nevirapine, delavirdine and efavirenz), or by inhibiting HIV protease activity (saquinavir, ritonavir, indinavir, nelfinavir, amprenavir and lopinavir). The present review focus both on these established classes of drugs and on new classes of compounds acting on other virus specific steps. |

Divulgação Siderophores: a microorganism's answer Benite, Anna Maria Canavarro Machado, Sérgio de Paula Machado, Bianca da Cunha Abstract in English: Siderophores (from the Greek: "iron carriers") are defined as relatively low molecular weight, ferric ion specific chelating agents elaborated by microorganisms growing under low iron stress. The role of these compounds is to scavenge iron from the environment and to make this essential chemical element available to the microbial cell. The present paper is a brief presentation of siderophore coordination chemistry with emphasis on those aspects relevant to the transportation of iron (III) complexes across biological membranes. Finally, the role of siderophores in infection and their clinical potential as iron scavenging molecules are reviewed. |

Divulgação Liposomes: has the magic bullet hit the target? Santos, Nuno C. Castanho, Miguel A. R. B. Abstract in English: Efficient drug delivery systems are as important as drug themselves. A powerful drug unable to reach the target cell is useless in practice. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet was the first carrier system to be proposed. The evolution in this domain has been quite slow as the natural mechanisms of mammals against foreign products are hard to overcome. However, lipid-based systems (liposomes and related vesicles) have attained reasonable success. The basic preparations and structural features of liposomes and related vesicles as well as their applications are addressed from the chemist's and biochemist's point of view. |
Nota técnica Graphite sticks recycled from common batteries and their use as a modified electrode in electrocatalytic hydrogenation of some organic substrates Lofrano, Renata C. Z. Padovan, Nei A. Romero, José R. Abstract in English: This paper presents some results on the employ of recycled graphite electrode obtained from used common 1.5 V batteries in the preparation of modified electrode and the electrocatalytical hydrogenation of benzaldehyde and of n-valeraldehyde. This inexpensive and easy to obtain electrode was prepared by coating it with a 1:1 mixed film of poly-(allylfenil ether): poly-[allyl p-(2-ethylammonium) benzene ether] and introduction of dispersed platinum particles by ion exchange and reduction of PtCl4-2. Electroreduction of H+ from aqueous H2SO4 using the proposed electrode hydrogenated the substrates in a way comparable with that of vitreous carbon electrode. |
Nota técnica Development of a low cost device for chemiluminescence measurements Borges, Eduardo P. Fernandes, Elizabeth N. Rocha, Fábio R. P. Reis, Boaventura F. Abstract in English: A simple and low cost device (ca. US$ 150) that comprises two photodiodes fixed in lab-made Perspex flow cell is proposed for chemiluminescence measurements. The characteristics of the device (large observation window and reduced thickness) allow maximizing the amount of the emitted radiation detected. A sensitivity improvement of ca. 50 % was observed by employing two photodiodes for signal measurements. The performance of the device was assessed by the oxidation of luminol by hydrogen peroxide, yielding a linear response within the range of 2.50 to 500 µmol L-1 H2O2. The detection limit was estimated as 0.8 µmol L-1 hydrogen peroxide which is comparable with those obtained by using equipments based on photomultipliers. |
Nota técnica Clay slurries analysis using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry with axial view configuration Silva, Cíntia S. Nóbrega, Joaquim A. Blanco, Telma Abstract in English: The goal of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of direct introduction of clay slurries in an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer with axial view configuration. Calibration was performed using a certified reference material with a mean particle size of 13 µm (IPT-42) and the analytical curve was applied for quantification of two others reference materials (IPT-28 and IPT-32) and four samples. It was demonstrated that the analytical curve thus obtained was not completely suitable for IPT-28 and samples due to different mineralogical phases determined by X-ray diffraction. After considering this effect, it was possible for most elements to obtain results in agreement with certified values or with values obtained by a conventional technique at a 95% confidence level. It was demonstrated that the ICP-OES with axial view configuration did not present any incompatibility with the direct introduction of a complex inorganic suspension. |

Assuntos gerais Tin chemistry in the 18th century, or how an inquiry became a research project Filgueiras, Carlos A. L. Abstract in English: An ominous suspicion arose in France in the second half of the 18th century, that household tin objects might be contaminated with arsenic. Charged with the task of studying and deciding the question, the chemists Pierre Bayen and Louis Charlard set up a comprehensive research project, which resulted in a book describing the whole enterprise. It is very gratifying to analyse this work today, for the many lights it sheds on the way chemistry was practised and reasoned at the time, and for the whiff of modernity we are presented with. |
