Quantitation of linalol in the essential oil of Aniba duckei Korstermans using a new POLYH4-MD capillary column in Gas Chromatography Silva, Denise Domingos da Chierice, Gilberto Orivaldo Galhiane, Mário Sérgio Chaar, Jamal da Silva Mouchrek-Filho, Victor Elias

Abstract in English:

In the present work a polyurethane polymer derived from castor oil was used as stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography. The polymer was obtained by reaction of hydroxylated compound and isocynate (NCO), forming urethane. Columns of 7 m x 0,25 mm were then coated with this stationary phase (film thickness of 0,25 µm) using static coating method. The Grob test was also performed. Samples of essential oil of the Aniba duckei Korstermans was then analysed in POLYH4-MD capillary column in order to evaluate its chromatographic perfomance. The linalool was found to be the major component and has been used as compound of departure for many important syntheses. Results show that the experimental columns give higher resolution and can be employed for analysis of essentials oils.

Employment of a single standard solution for analytical curves in flow injection analysis system coupled to solid phase spectrophotometry Oliveira, Fábio Santos de Korn, Mauro

Abstract in English:

In this work two procedures were proposed for analytical curves construction using a single standard solution employing a flow injection system with solid phase spectrophotometric detection (FI-SPS). A flow cell contends the chromogenic reagent 1-(2-tiazolylazo)-2-naphtol was positioned on the optical path. The first procedure was based on controlled concentration of analyte on solid phase and the relations between absorbance and the total volume of injected allowed the calculation of analyte concentration. The second procedure was developed employing controlled dispersion/retention in flow system where analyte concentration was obtained by exploiting the relation between transient signals of samples and single standard solution at equivalent reading time. The procedures were successfully applied for zinc determination in synthetic solutions with good precision and accuracy at 95% confidence level.

Potentiometric determination of cetylpyridinium chloride in oral desinfectants by flow injection analysis Baptista, Paula C. S. Araújo, Alberto N. Montenegro, Maria da Conceição B. S. M.

Abstract in English:

The work describes a new procedure for cetylpyridinium chloride determination in oral disinfectants, based on a flow-injection system with potentiometric detection. The determination was based on the measurement of picrate concentration decrease as result of ion-pair reaction with the analyte present in the injected sample. In the optimised set-up the sample injection volume was kept at 400 µL and merged downstream with the reagent solution containing 1,0 x10-5 mol/L of picrate adjusted to pH 5.0 with citrate/citric acid buffer. The flow rate was fixed at 8 mL/min and the reactor length at 40 cm. The proposed procedure enables the determination of cetylpyridinium in the analytical range of 5,0x10-6 - 7,5x10-5 mol/L at a sampling rate of 60/h. The results for real samples had a precision better than 3% and were comparable to the labelled values.

Evaluation of the soil sensitivity for the acidity near a coal fired power plant (Figueira, PR-Brazil) Flues, Marlene Hama, Patrícia Fornaro, Adalgiza

Abstract in English:

Rainwater samples were analyzed during a one-year period (June 1999 - June 2000) and presented concentration of pH = 4.9 (volume weight mean). The ions concentrations results showed a high sulfate concentration (35 µmol L-1), followed by the cations concentration of sodium, calcium and ammonium (35, 16 and 30 µmol L-1, respectively). Due to the great contribution of these cations in the sulfate neutralization action, the rainwater of this region had only a light acid characteristic. The soil characteristic was acid and the bioavailable concentration of the alkaline cations (Ca, Mg and K) presented high calcium concentrations (1001 ± 357 mg kg-1) compared with the other cations. The determination of soil sensitivity to acid rain was calculated by the ratio BC/Al3+ (BC = Ca2+ + Mg2+ + K+) and presented the average value of 5.1 ± 3.3. This preliminary evaluation of soil susceptibility by the ratio BC/Al3+ showed that the local soil and vegetation type (tropical Savannah) were sensitive to acid deposition. The long term of this impacting condition (acid rain, high sulfate deposition) could be harmful to the soil and vegetation quality.

Flavonoid and triterpenes from Stigmaphyllom paralias David, Jorge M. Santos, Fátima A. Guedes, Maria Lenise da S. David, Juceni P.

Abstract in English:

Stigmaphyllom paralias is a herb belonging to the family Malpighiaceae that occurs in sand soil of brazilian " restinga". This is the first report regarding phytochemical study with this species. The hexane extract of the aerial parts of plant afforded the triterpenes friedelin, lupenone, 3-oxo-alpha-amirin and 3-oxo-beta-amirin, the mixture of alpha-amirinyl palmitate and stearate, lupeol and 3,4-seco-friedelan-3-oic acid. The AcOEt extract yielded the flavonoid luteolin-7-rutinoside. All compounds were characterized by analysis of spectrometric data and the fatty acids esterified with alpha-amirine were identified by GC/MS of methyl derivatives of transesterified products . This is the first natural occurence of 3,4-seco-friedelan-3-oic acid and the 13C NMR spectral data were inequivocally assigned by two-dimensional techniques. This work also permitted to correct the 13C NMR resonances attributed to methyl groups C-26 and C-27 of fridelin.

Photochromism in tungsten oxide thin films of different compositions Galvão, José R. Scarminio, Jair

Abstract in English:

Tungsten oxide thin films with three different compositions were deposited by reactive sputtering in an oxygen-argon plasma. In a system composed of a home made photochemical reactor coupled with an optic fiber spectrophotometer, the photochromic effect was studied in these oxide films as function of UV irradiation time, in ethanol, methanol and formaldehyde atmospheres. It was observed that the photochromic efficiency depends on the vapor chemical nature where the film is irradiated as well as the film composition. Kinetic analysis suggest that two kinds of optical absorption centers should respond by the photochromic effect in these films, one generated at film surface and other inside it, which one presenting a different time constant.

Synthesis and characterization of a VOPO4-DMA compound Farias, Robson Fernandes de

Abstract in English:

A layered matrix, alpha-VOPO4.2H2O was used as host species to produce a VOPO4.dimethylacetamide intercalation compound. The oxovanadium matrix and the synthesized hybrid were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, X-ray diffractometry and SEM microscopy. The X-ray diffraction patterns show that the VOPO4.dimethylacetamide compound is amorphous, but can be turned lamellar after a solubilization-crystallization process. The SEM micrographs obtained for the VOPO4-dimethylacetamide hybrid matrix show that the microstructure of VOPO4.2H2O is changed after reaction, with a delamination of the oxovanadium matrix.
Use of the EPR technique to determine thermal stability of some humified organic substances found in soil organic-mineral fractions Saab, Sérgio da Costa Martin-Neto, Ladislau

Abstract in English:

In this work, using the EPR spectroscopy, we analysed the thermal stability of some organic-mineral compounds found in a Gleysoil from Rio Janeiro. It was observed a complete disappearance of the EPR signal around 600 °C for the < 2 µm fraction and a residual EPR signal of semiquinone free radical for the 2-20 µm and 20-53 µm fractions at the same temperature. Also, the experiments showed that the 2-20 µm fraction had a larger concentration of semiquinone free radical per g of carbon and a smaller line width indicated a larger humification of this fraction. This is an evidence that the soil organic matter of this fraction (2-20 µm) is more stable than the other ones.

A new model for the H2 antagonists binding site based on 3D QSAR analysis Fabiano, Ronaldo Lepesqueur Montanari, Carlos Alberto

Abstract in English:

A new model for the H2 antagonists binding site is postulated based on adsorption coefficient values of sixteen antagonists, in the affinities constants of the primary and secondary binding sites, and in the chemical characterization of these sites by 3D-QSAR. All study compounds are in the extended conformation and deprotonated form. The lateral validation of the QSARs, CoMFA analysis, affinity constants and chemical similarity data suggest that the antagonists block the proton pump in the H2 receptor interacting with two tyrosines - one in the helix 5, and other in the helix 6.

Ab initio calculation of dynamic Raman intensities using the linear response theory Vidal, Luciano N. Vazquez, Pedro A. M.

Abstract in English:

In this paper a methodology for the computation of Raman scattering cross-sections and depolarization ratios within the Placzek Polarizability Theory is described. The polarizability gradients are derived from the values of the dynamic polarizabilities computed at the excitation frequencies using ab initio Linear Response Theory. A sample application of the computational program, at the HF, MP2 and CCSD levels of theory, is presented for H2O and NH3. The results show that high correlated levels of theory are needed to achieve good agreement with experimental data.

Pharmaceutical drugs in the environment Bila, Daniele Maia Dezotti, Márcia

Abstract in English:

Pharmaceutical drugs have been detected in sewage treatment plants, surface waters, underground waters and potable waters. Some investigations have been conducted in several countries such as Germany, Brazil, Canada, United States, The Netherlands, England and Italy. Patients and animals excrete part of pharmaceuticals used for human and veterinary medicine after administration in domestic sewage or on the soil. Drugs residues which have not been completely removed during passage through a sewage treatment plant (STP) enter the aquatic environment. The effects of such residual drugs in terrestrial and aquatic organisms are scarcely known.

Antimonials employed in the treatment of leishmaniaisis: the state of the art Rath, Susanne Trivelin, Luciano Augusto Imbrunito, Talitha Rebecca Tomazela, Daniela Maria Jesús, Marcelo Nunes de Marzal, Percy Calvo Andrade Junior, Heitor Franco de Tempone, André Gustavo

Abstract in English:

Antimony preparations are the drugs of choice for the treatment of leishmaniasis over 90 years, a disease that currently affects 12 million people worldwide. Its introduction was based on 19th century concepts of therapeutic effects of metal salts as arsenicals and other metals, most of them abandoned due to toxic effects or better drugs. In the last three decades, there was a great improvement in the knowledge of cell biology and immunology of those infections, but chemotherapy has not been improved in the same strength. The structure and mechanism of action of the two pentavalent antimonial drugs of choice, meglumine antimoniate and sodium stibogluconate, are not well known and the contamination of those pharmaceutical by toxic contaminants have been verified.

Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry applied to study inorganic and organo-metallic species Moraes, Maria Carolina B. Lago, Claudimir Lucio do

Abstract in English:

Although electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ES-MS) has been extensively applied to study organic and biochemical species, it is also specially suitable to study inorganic and organo-metallic species. Such species, even those that are low-volatile or thermo-unstable, can be easily ionized or simply transferred from liquid to gas phase by electrospray. However, chemical transformations frequently occur during the process. This paper discusses the fundamental aspects of electrospray ionization as well as its analytical applicability to inorganic and organo-metallic species in order to spread the technique and make its characteristics more familiar to potential users.

Energy transfer between cationic dyes in homogeneous systems Oliveira, Hueder Paulo Moisés de Machulek Junior, Amilcar Legendre, Alexandre de Oliveira Gehlen, Marcelo Henrique

Abstract in English:

In this work, the energy transfer by dipole-dipole interaction between cationic dyes in n-alcohols (methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol and 1-butanol) is studied by time resolved and steady state fluorescence measurements. The critical radii of energy transfer were determined by three independent methods; the spectral overlap, fluorescence decay profiles, and relative intensity measurements. In all solvents, R0 values of the dye pairs obtained from spectral overlap were between 40 to 90 Å. Steady state and time resolved fluorescence measurements resulted in values of R0 in the range of 50 - 80 Å, with good correlation of values.

2,5-hexanodione determination in urine samples subjected to acid hydrolysis: relevance of the chromatographic column and the pH Barroca, Márcia Martins Silveira, Josianne Nicácio Alvarez-Leite, Edna Maria

Abstract in English:

Acidic hydrolysis of samples is frequent in urinary 2,5-hexanodione determination. This hydrolysis should be performed under proper conditions, in order to avoid interference, such as the presence of 2,5-dimethylfurane and 2-acetylfurane. The results of the present work, as well as data from the literature, show that the use of non-polar or slightly polar chromatographic columns of 30 m length is an essential condition for 2,5-HD determination in an acid hydrolysed urine sample. In the same way the pH should be kept between 0.3 and 0.5. The mean concentrations of 2,5-HD in samples submitted to hydrolysis (0.50 ± 0.28 mg/g of creatinine) was about 3 times higher than those found in the samples without acid hydrolysis (0.19 ± 0.3 mg/g of creatinine).

Recovering procedures for liquid and solid Ag residues Bendassolli, José Albertino Tavares, Glauco Arnold Ignoto, Raquel de Fátima Rosseti, Alexssandra Luiza Rodrigues Molina

Abstract in English:

A simple procedure for recovering Ag, generated as residual solutions, from three different analytical methods, is presented. Based on the rate of the total Ag mass recovered, to the initial one in the initial residual solutions, efficiency as high as 97,9 ± 2,9% was obtained in the process. The purity of Ag, as Ag2O, was verified by employing this reagent in the determination of S in plant tissue. This leads to the generation of a solid metallic Ag as waste. In this situation, an 88,7 ± 0,6% Ag recovery was acquired, when a HNO3 solution was employed as solvent.

Laboratory waste management: recovery of elements and final disposal Afonso, Júlio Carlos Noronha, Leandro Anido Felipe, Renata Pinheiro Freidinger, Nicolas

Abstract in English:

This work shows some laboratory waste management developed in order to recover some elements or to prepare the waste for a correct final disposal. The 25 elements chosen cover basically all chemical behaviors found for the metals in the Periodic Table. The treatments adopted were based on the classical behavior in aqueous solution (wet chemistry) but an important condition for a full success was the previous knowledge of the qualitative composition of the wastes treated. Some general trends were found: the final liquid waste was always saline and normally presented a higher volume than the original waste; most original wastes were acid in nature; steps such as solid-liquid separation, washing, evaporating and calcining were currently performed. This work was also a very good experience in chemistry in solution for students and showed them the need of treating wastes for a better environment.

Abstract in English:

A system for disposal and recovery of the main effluents and chemical waist from isotope separation plants and enriched compounds-15N and 34S production has been carried out at the Stable Isotope Laboratory (LIE) of the CENA/USP. Around four hundred thousand liters of effluents has been recovered yearly. Among the recovered chemical wastes, the more relevant are: ammonia; brome; ammonium and sodium sulfate; sodium hydroxide; sulfur dioxide; and hydrochloric acid. Chemical wastes containg recoverable heavy metals (Ag, Cr and Cu) and solvents (methanol, ethanol and acetone) are processed and recovered. Gaseous emissions, mainly H2S are used for recovery of heavy metals solutions. The minimization of the residues waters, as well the reduction of electric energy consume was established using a water deionization system. A cost/effect balance of the process is reported.

Evaluation of graduate programs in chemistry in Brazil: 2002 version Gama, Alfredo Arnóbio S. da Cadore, Solange Ferreira, Vitor F.

Abstract in English:

The graduate programs in Chemistry were evaluated and classified from the data collected for the period 1998-2000 by CAPES, the Minister of Education agency that is responsible for the regulation and support of this level of human resources formation. The next classification will be made in 2004, from the data of the period 2001-2003. The years in between, like the present year, are used for an evaluation without classification, from what comments are emitted to the programs to know how their data are improving or not, before the new ranking reporting. The progresses in the area of chemistry in Brazil are analysed from the confrontation of the present data with that of all previous evaluations, since 1983. The results confirm that the research and graduate formation in the area of Chemistry is continuously improving in Brazil, particularly during the last seven years.
