Synthesis of liquid menthol by hydrogenation of dementholized peppermint oil over Ni catalysts Manuale, Debora L. Betti, Carolina Marchi, Alberto J. Yori, Juan C. Romeo, Eva

Abstract in English:

Hydrogenation of (-)-menthone and (+)-isomenthone was studied at 2.7 MPa and 100 ºC. The objective was to produce a liquid menthol mixture rich in (-)-menthol from dementholized peppermint oil. Ni-based catalysts were tested and compared for this reaction: a) 6 and 12% Ni dispersed into a nonstoichiometric magnesium aluminate (Ni-Mg-Al) with spinel structure; b) Ni-Raney catalyst. Both types of catalysts were active for (-)-menthone and (+)-isomenthone hydrogenation. Lower conversion but higher selectivity to (-)-menthol was obtained with Ni-Mg-Al catalysts. However, they rapidly lost their activity. Instead Ni-Raney catalysts kept its original activity even after several hydrogenation runs.

Phosphorus application for the chemical immobilization of cadmium in contaminated soil Trevizam, Anderson Ricardo Villanueva, Felipe Carlos Alvarez Muraoka, Takashi Nascimento Filho, Virgilio Franco do Abreu Junior, Cassio Hamilton

Abstract in English:

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of phosphorus on the Cd availability to plants of a contaminated soil using 109Cd isotope and chemical extractants. The experiment was set in a randomized block design and the soil was labeled with 222 KBq of 109Cd per pot and received 5 rates of P as triple superphosphate, growing lettuce plants as test crop. The use of phosphorus reduced pH of soil which altered the Cd availability in DTPA and Mehlich extractants. The lettuce Cd content decreased but its accumulation and L value increased in all treatments compared to the control, demonstrating the inefficiency of phosphorus in reducing the Cd availability.

The influence of ammonium quantity on the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles in microemulsion Fernandes, Maria Tereza Cortez Kawachi, Elizabete Yoshie

Abstract in English:

Iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized in microemulsion systems composed by Triton X-100/hexyl alcohol/cyclohexane/aqueous solution. The nanoparticles were synthesized in microemulsions containing different amounts of ammonium, in order to evaluate the influence of this parameter on the size of the nanoparticles and on the phase transformation after heat treatment. Powder materials were obtained after centrifugation, washing and drying, and they were analyzed as synthesized and after heating at 350, 500 and 1000 °C. It was observed that the higher amount of ammonium induced smaller particles and minor phase transformation, possibly due to a preferential nucleation process.

Influence of dissolved sulfides on copper complexation in surface waters using voltammetric methods Scheffer, Elizabeth W. O. Grassi, Marco T.

Abstract in English:

In this work a sulfide quantification protocol using voltammetric methods was developed to evaluate the effect of dissolved sulfides on copper complexation. On the basis of pH, sulfide release from the dissociation of specific metal sulfide complexes can be electrochemically measured and then removed (as H2S) by a N2 purge. Cathodic stripping square wave voltammetry (CSSWV) was conducted to quantify Cu sulfides complexes which dissociate at pH < 5.0 during the process of acid titration.

Storage influence of dried leaves on patchouly (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) essential oil Sant'ana, Trícia Cavalcanti Pergentino de Blank, Arie Fitzgerald Vieira, Sylvia Dantas Arrigoni-Blank, Maria de Fátima Jesus, Hugo César R. de Alves, Péricles Barreto

Abstract in English:

The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of five storage times of dry leaves of two patchouli genotypes on its essential oil content and chemical composition. Harvest was realized four months after planting. Storage influenced essential oil content of genotype POG-002. Patchoulol was the majority compound. Storage of dry leaves increased significatively the content of the compounds α-bulnesene and germacrene A of genotype POG-021 and longicanfenilone, pogostol and patchoulol of POG-002. However, storage reduced significatively the content of the compounds cicloseichelene, β-cariofilene, α-guaiene, acifilene and α-bulnesene of the essential oil of genotype POG-002.

Preparation of silver nanoparticles in the absence of polymer stabilizers Sifontes, Ángela B. Melo, Luis Maza, Carlos Mendes, Juan J. Mediavilla, Marta Brito, Joaquín L. Zoltan, Tamara Albornoz, Alberto

Abstract in English:

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared by means of the polyol method in the absence of stabilizing polymers. To accomplish this objective, AgNO3 was added to ethylene glycol in the presence of NaOH (1 mol.L-1), the suspension formed was irradiated with a microwave source for 60 seconds at a power of 465 watts. It was found that under these conditions AgNPs of sizes between 4-18 nm are formed. Also the results indicate that part of the ethylene glycol is oxidized to carbonyl compounds that reduce the Ag+. These organic compounds are adsorbed on the surfaces of AgNPs, forming a protective film that prevents their aggregation.

Photocatalytic degradation of sulfametoxazole, trimethoprim and diclofenac in aquoeus solutions Cruz, Lutécia H. da Henning, Fernanda G. Santos, Arlene B. dos Peralta-Zamora, Patricio

Abstract in English:

In this work the photocatalytic degradation of sulfametoxazole, trimethoprim and potassium diclofenac was evaluated by using TiO2 and ZnO photocatalysts. In optimized experimental conditions (pH 4, TiO2: 50 mg) the TiO2-photocatalysis allowed an almost total degradation of the studied drugs with mineralization of about 80% at reaction times of 120 min. Some mechanistic differences were observed between TiO2 and ZnO in the degradation study involving potassium diclofenac. At the first reaction times the use of ZnO leads to generation of transient species that strongly absorb in the UV spectral region, a fact not observed in studies involving TiO2.

Validation of an analytical method for the determination of total mercury in urine samples using cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CV-AAS): case study Guilhen, Sabine Neusatz Pires, Maria Aparecida Faustino Dantas, Elizabeth Sonoda Keiko Xavier, Fernanda Villibor

Abstract in English:

Mercury is a toxic metal used in a variety of substances over the course history. One of its more dubious uses is in dental amalgam restorations. It is possible to measure very small concentrations of this metal in the urine of exposed subjects by the cold vapor atomic absorption technique. The present work features the validation as an essential tool to confirm the suitability of the analytical method chosen to accomplish such determination. An initial analysis will be carried out in order to evaluate the environmental and occupational levels of exposure to mercury in 39 members of the auxiliary dental staff at public consulting rooms in the city of Araguaína (TO).

Electrochemical and theoretical evaluation of the interaction between dna and amodiaquine: evidence of the guanine adduct formation Arguelho, Maria Lara P. M. Alves, José do Patrocínio H. Stradiotto, Nelson R. Lacerda Júnior, Valdemar Pires, José Maria Beatriz, Adilson

Abstract in English:

The electrochemical behavior of the interaction of amodiaquine with DNA on a carbon paste electrode was studied using voltametric techniques. In an acid medium, an electroactive adduct is formed when amodiaquine interacts with DNA. The anodic peak is dependent on pH, scan rate and the concentration of the pharmaceutical. Adduct formation is irreversible in nature, and preferentially occurs by interaction of the amodiaquine with the guanine group. Theoretical calculations for optimization of geometry, and DFT analyses and on the electrostatic potential map (EPM), were used in the investigation of adduct formation between amodiaquine and DNA.

Occurrence of biflavones in leaves of Caesalpinia pyramidalis specimens Bahia, Marcus V. David, Juceni P. David, Jorge M.

Abstract in English:

The chloroform partition of methanol extract of leaves of Caesalpinia pyramidalis was submitted to different chromatographic procedures which afforded besides agathisflavone and taxifolin, the minor biflavones loniflavone, amentoflavone, 5'- hydroxyamentoflavone and podocarpusflavone A. The structures of the compounds were established on the basis of NMR and MS data analysis. Besides, the content of biflavones of different specimens of C. pyramidalis, which are collected in different habitats of the Brazilian semi-arid region, was determinated by LC-APCI-MS analysis. These analysis demonstrated that only the specimens harvested in Bahia state showed collectively the presence of agathisflavone, amentoflavone, sequoiaflavone and podocarpusflavone A.

Synchronous scanning phosphorimetry for the selective determination of chrysene: a metrological study Cunha, Alessandra L. M. C. da Ziolli, Roberta L. Aucélio, Ricardo Q.

Abstract in English:

Room-temperature phosphorimetry was used to quantify trace levels of chrysene in sugar-cane spirits and in fish bile. A selective phosphorescence enhancer (AgNO3) and synchronous scanning allowed the detection of ng amounts of chrysene. Accuracy (113 ± 17%) and selectivity was evaluated using the CRM-NIST-1647d - Priority Pollutant Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in acetonitrile. Analysis of sugar-cane spirit samples enabled recovery of 108 ± 18% which agreed with the one achieved using HPLC. Method's uncertainty was equivalent to 3.4 ng of the analyte, however, the analyte pre-concentration (SPE) improved sensibility and minimized the relative uncertainty. Characterization and homogeneity studies in fish bile were also performed.

Comparison of the speciation of trace metals in freshwater employing voltammetry, diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) and a chemical equilibrium model Anjos, Vanessa E. dos Abate, Gilberto Grassi, Marco T.

Abstract in English:

Speciation of metals in a synthetic freshwater was comparatively evaluated using Anodic Stripping Voltammetry, Diffusive Gradients in Thin Films and a Chemical Equilibrium Model. The labile fractions of Cu and Zn quantified by DGT were similar to the ones measured by ASV. The labile species of Cd and Pb could not be determined by both experimental methods due to the formation of inert complexes with organic ligands in the sample. Despite the differences among the methods, the speciation results obtained by the use of DGT and ASV agreed well with predictions made by the chemical equilibrium model.

Volume calculation in van der Waals equation by the cardano method Lemes, Nelson H. T. Oliveira, Jessé M. Braga, João P.

Abstract in English:

Analytical solutions of a cubic equation with real coefficients are established using the Cardano method. The method is first applied to simple third order equation. Calculation of volume in the van der Waals equation of state is afterwards established. These results are exemplified to calculate the volumes below and above critical temperatures. Analytical and numerical values for the compressibility factor are presented as a function of the pressure. As a final example, coexistence volumes in the liquid-vapor equilibrium are calculated. The Cardano approach is very simple to apply, requiring only elementary operations, indicating an attractive method to be used in teaching elementary thermodynamics.

Calcium phosphates of biological interest: importance as biomaterials, properties and methods for coatings obtaining Guastaldi, Antonio Carlos Aparecida, Anahi Herrera

Abstract in English:

For decades the Hydroxyapatite (HA) was only bioceramic of calcium phosphate system used for bone replacement and regeneration, due to its similarity to the mineral phase of bones and teeth. Because its slow degradation, other calcium phosphate classified as biodegradable started to awaken interest, such as: amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP), octacalcium phosphate (OCP) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP). This work presents the evolution of the use of other calcium phosphates due to their better solubility than the HA, comparing their main physical-chemical and biological properties. Are also presented the main methods used to obtain bioceramic coatings on metal and polymer surfaces.

Green alternatives for sample preparation and determination of phenolic pollutants in water Rodrigues, Guilherme Dias Silva, Luis Henrique Mendes da Silva, Maria do Carmo Hespanhol da

Abstract in English:

The restricted availability of water sources suitable for consumption and high costs for obtaining potable water has caused an increase of the conscience concerning the use. Thus, there is a high demand for "environmentally safe methods" which are according to the principles of Green Chemistry. Moreover, these methods should be able to provide reliable results for the analysis of water quality for various pollutants, such as phenol. In this work, greener alternatives for sample preparation for phenol determination in aqueous matrices are presented, which include: liquid phase microextraction, solid phase microextraction, flow analysis, cloud point extraction and aqueous two-phase systems.

Abstract in English:

The electrochemical study of glass like tungsten oxide derivatives requires the construction of special electrodes due to the fact that these glasses are not conductive. Electrodes modified with WO3 change their color when submitted to some potential perturbation. The color change of the electrochromic materials was observed in situ by coupling an electrochemical cell to a stereomicroscope. The constructed cell is versatile and may represent a great contribution to the electrochemical studies of materials, especially in the systems where it is interest to observe the working electrode surface during the electrochemical experiment.

Non-integer orders in chemical kinetics Oliveira, André P. Faria, Roberto B.

Abstract in English:

Starting from zero-, first-, and second-order integrated laws for chemical kinetics, some cases are shown which produce fractional orders. Taking the Michaelis-Menten mechanism as a first example, it is shown that substrate order can go from 1 to zero, depending on relative concentration of enzyme and substrate. Using other examples which show fractional orders higher than one and even negative (inhibition), it is shown that the presence of an equilibrium before or parallel to the rate determining step can be the reason for fractional orders, which is an indication of a more complex mechanism.

The Coriolis effect: from pendulums to molecules Borges, Emílio Braga, João Pedro

Abstract in English:

Coriolis force is an effect which arises in rotating reference frames such as the Earth. This force influences large oceanic motions, atmospheric inertial circles, horizontal and vertical deviations in moving bodies. The Foucault's pendulum is another special case about the Coriolis force influence on macroscopic processes. This pendulum is an example of how experimental sciences can be essential for philosophical and social changes, since it was crucial to prove the Earth's rotation. The Coriolis force has an important role also at microscopic level; it couples vibrational and rotational molecular motions and this fact has consequences in spectroscopic and energetic molecular processes. These points are discussed in this paper.

Phytoproducts and economic development Zuanazzi, José Angelo S. Mayorga, Paulo

Abstract in English:

Natural products have been, historically, very important for Brazil. Coffee, sugar and soy were some examples that prove this economical significance. A project that involves phytoproducts should be guide by three main axis: agriculture management for the plants; pharmaceutical; support the national industry and academy. In Brazil, pharmaceutical products contribute negatively to the commerce balance showing an enormous technological dependence in this economical sector. The consolidation of the phytoproduct's chain in Brazil could contribute for the development of the pharmaceutical sector in order to help all domains in natural products area.
