Technology transfer via marketing at Embrapa

This work is an attempt to offer an analysis of the efforts presently undertaken by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA)in the development of a Technology Business Policy. It assesses the current practices of commercialization of technologies/services/products adopted by EMBRAPA and proposes a Technological Business Sector model. The review of the literature focused on the concepts of marketing, difusion and transfer of technology. The methodology included descriptive research and exploratory studies. A survey was carried out among the decentralized units of EMBRAPA, with 36 out of 39 questionnaires having been returned. The results indicate that decentralized units operate beyond their capacity, that they lack marketing expertise. In conclusion, the study suggests that, in order to accomplish an efficient Technological Business Policy, EMBRAPA must invest in staff qualification; implement a business culture and eliminate burocratic constraints. Above all, EMBRAPA should establish goals to be achieved by the commercialization sector.
