NETWORK STRUCTURAL CHANGES OF TWO NATIONAL STEELWORK GROUPS

ABSTRACT

Many researches whose object of investigation are organization networks concern themselves analyzing how networks constrain and drive the actions of those organizations that make up the networks. In this respect, their concern is driven to the network aspects that increase or constrain the ability of some organizations in modeling the industrial development. At the same time, businessmen engage themselves in maneuvers that are able to ensure key positions inside their industry networks. This perspective brings new ways of doing organization network studies. If networks drive businessmen’s actions, it’s possible to say that those actions also define the network structure. The goal of this article is to contribute to a better understanding of the construction and mutation dynamics of the organization networks. Such work is accomplished by analyzing two national steelwork groups, Gerdau and CSN, and their interlock directorate networks between 1988 and 1999.
