Two days and two very special visits at RAMB headquarters

What could a pediatric cardiologist born in Germany, who has lived in London for over 20 years, and a professor of anatomy at the University of Split in Croatia have in common? In addition to being amicable people and being passionate for what they do, Sabine Kleinert and Ana Marušic are publishers of scientific journals in the medical area. Kleinert is the Senior Executive Editor of one of the world's leading medical journals, The Lancet, and Marusic was the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Croatian Medical Journal, a publication that has very similar profile and characteristics to the Brazilian publications.

After receiving an invitation from RAMB, and with the support of Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) and of the Instituto do Coração, the two of them were in São Paulo, at the headquarters of the Brazilian Medical Association, on November 6 and 7, for the I Workshop on Scientific Publishing (Box 1). Editors of Brazilian scientific journals in the healthcare area received information about management of the editorial process, plagiarism detection, how to handle with self-citations, and the important contribution of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), of which Sabine Kleinert is the vice-president and which was created to provide support to publishers in delicate situations that may involve authors, researchers, and research sponsors. COPE prepared the guidelines on publication ethics and on the identification of plagiarism that can be found in the instructions for authors of RAMB (http://www.elsevier.com/framework_products/promis_ misc/RAMB_Guides_WWfor_Publication.pdf).

The editors also received some tips on how to increase the international visibility of their journals, how to find good (and timely) reviewers, how to proceed when there are very different opinions, and strategies to increase the impact factor (Fig. 1).

Even though they had never attended an event together before, both speakers delivered us a combination that was simultaneously harmonious and precise, sharing their individual experiences with our editors. All presentations used in the workshop were kindly offered to us by both publishers and are available on the RAMB website.
