OBITUARY

Professor Luiz Francisco "Poli" de Figueiredo

Revista da Associação Médica Brasileira (RAMB) has lost a major contributor. Dr. Luiz Francisco "Poli" de Figueiredo died on July 1, in São Paulo. Professor Figueiredo, who was one of the journal's reviewers from 2001 to 2003 and Associate Editor from 2004 to 2005, was born in Porto Alegre, on July 1, 1959. "Poli" was very proud of his southern heritage. According to his wife Lúciane, "he always said that their three children were born in São Paulo, but were baptized in Porto Alegre, so they were southern at heart." He was also a supporter of Internacional soccer team there and here, a supporter of São Paulo soccer team, in order to go more often to the stadium with his children. He graduated from Medical School in 1983 at Fundacao Faculdade Federal de Ciencias Médicas de Porto Alegre. He specialized in Barcelona, and then obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. Degrees at UNIFESP in São Paulo and Post-Doctorate degree at University of Texas, USA. He was a researcher of international renown in themes such as trauma, shock, sepsis, blood substitutes, hypertonic solutions, ischemia-reperfusion and multiple organ failure and was currently a CNPq fellow. He was a consultant for CAPES, CNPq, and FAPESP. He was the Full Professor of the Department of Surgery of Universidade de São Paulo Medical School. He published 80 papers in major scientific journals and was advisor of 10 M.Sc. students and 15 Ph.D. students, an impressive academic performance that will certainly serve as an example for his students and colleagues. An example that is made even more significant by the courage and determination with which he faced his illness.
