Analysis of the vegetation in the springs of the Piauitinga River watershed, Salgado, SE Brazil

The objective of this study was to analyze the vegetation surrounding springs in the Piauitinga River watershed in the city of Salgado, SE, in order to generate tools for implantation of projects on springs riparian vegetation and watercourses recovery in this unit of planning. Fourteen springs were analyzed, divided into four categories: a punctual-preserved spring (PrP), a punctual-disturbed spring (PP), six punctual-degraded springs (DP) and six diffuse-degraded springs (DD). The survey was analyzed by using population census of the vegetation in a radius of 50m in the vicinity of the springs, equivalent to 0.79ha, where every living species of shrubs-tree with diameter at breast height (DBH at 1.30m above the ground) > 5.0cm were recorded. In the floristic composition, 1,874 individuals belonging to 101 species, 75 genera and 42 families were recorded. Of all the species recorded, 26 were classified as pioneers, 28 as light demanding climax, 11 as shade-tolerant species and it was not found any information on classification for 35 species. The diversity indices of Shannon-Weaver (H ') eqüability of Pielou (J') calculated for all the springs were 3.5 nats/ind and 0.76, respectively. The total density observed for the set of springs in this study was 170 individuals/ha and basal area was 2.64 m²/ha.
