Editorial

This is the first issue of the Brazilian Journal of Botany (formerly Revista Brasileira de Botânica) published completely in English – as opposed to an average of approximately 30% English-language articles in previous volumes. As the associates of the Sociedade Botânica de São Paulo – SBSP determined that all articles had to be submitted in English starting in December of 2011, the SBSP actively participated in the translation of some of the texts that had been submitted prior to that date. However, from this time forward, it will be the sole responsibility of the authors to translate and grammatically revise the texts in English. The articles in the current issue had been submitted prior to establishing the new rules, and before the new structuring and composition of the editorial board, and were therefore evaluated by the former editorial board, as can be seen on the back cover of the present issue.

Three of the articles published in this issue concern non-vascular plants, including cyanobacteria, algae, and bryophytes, while nine focus on vascular plants, including their Biochemistry and Physiology, Ecology and Biogeography, Reproductive Biology, Structural Botany, Systematics, Phylogeny and Floristics; there is also one Short Communication. We hope that our four new editors, assisted by a great team of Brazilian and foreign associate editors and their chosen referees, will continue to receive many good and original articles. It is our intent to live up to the expectations of the associates of the SBSP and transform the Brazilian Journal of Botany into a truly international journal and an important reference of the Plant Sciences – and to do that we will need Botanists to continue to submit interesting and innovative articles, reviews, and opinions in accordance with the new norms and regulations of our Journal. Future authors must be aware that not complying with these norms may cause delays in the publication (or even the rejection) of a new manuscript. Editors in the main office will quickly respond to any questions or criticism via e-mail (brazjbot@gmail.com), mail (Brazilian Journal of Botany – Caixa Postal 57088 – 04089-972 – São Paulo, SP – Brazil), or telephone (55.11-50676059). The editors can also provide, upon request, the names and addresses of known professionals or agencies that can translate articles from Portuguese to English. Authors should be aware that submission via Scielo may generate some difficulties regarding the sizes of some illustrations. If a manuscript exceeds their limit, we recommend that you get in contact with us using the e-mail address brazjbot@gmail.com. We suggest that the authors and other interested individuals consult our web page (www.botanicasp.org) for news and other information regarding the Society and the Brazilian Journal of Botany. We also suggest that authors become associates of the SBSP, especially since associates are not required to pay publication charges in the Brazilian Journal of Botany and receive copies of each quarterly issue.

Finally, I would like to thank all of those who were involved in the publication of the Revista Brasileira de Botânica during the last three years during my term as Editor-in-Chief, the new members of the Brazilian Journal of Botany team, and those continuing from the previous board – and I am confident that they will put all their efforts, enthusiasm, and competence towards the same goals in the years to come. We can all make the Brazilian Journal of Botany a truly modern and model journal!
