Endemic species from Serra da Canastra National Park, Minas Gerais

The Serra da Canastra National Park is located in Southwestern State of Minas Gerais, Brazil (20°00'-20°30' S and 46°15'-47°00' W), municipalities of São Roque de Minas, Sacramento and Delfinópolis. The Park has 71,525 hectares and altitudes ranging from 800 m to 1200 m, with the highest elevation of 1496 m. Vegetation types are forests, including gallery forests along creeks and rivers, as well as small patches of cloud forests and montain forests; savannah with four different physionomic types and "campos rupestres". The collections were done from February 1994 to December 1995 in several places along the main road that crosses the entire park, and trails leading to abandoned small farms, in a total of 12 field trips to the park. The floristic survey presents 101 families, 73 of which were identified, resulting in 768 species. Based on the distribution of 45 endemic species, with several new species belonging to 11 families, 17 endemism areas were outlined and described, and are proposed as permanent protection zones.
