ABSTRACT
This study aimed to investigate the sports trajectory of standout handball athletes who continued playing from youth to adulthood and to analyse the influence of social agents on their retention in sport. It is a qualitative study, based on document analysis and interviews with six athletes from Paraná (2013–2019). Data were analysed using content analysis. Results indicate that family support was essential for entry, continuity, and transitions in sport. Coaches played a key role in performance and retention. Peer bonds and recognition of performance were also decisive in shaping athletes’ sporting paths.
