A emergência e a disseminação do futebol na cidadede Rio Grande/RS: uma análise a partir do jornal Echodo Sul (1900-1916)

ABSTRACT

This study is characterized as a historical research reviewing the emergence and dissemination of modern football in the city of Rio Grande/RS. It encompasses the period from 1900 to 1916 and the empirical corpus was made up by a daily newspaper called Echo do Sul. The study analyzes football logics at the time, without focusing on one football club in particular. In the studied period, a total of 47 football clubs were identified in the newspaper with different socioeconomic, ethnic and geographical characteristics. Thus, the research concluded that, unlike what prevails in the history of football in the city of Rio Grande, the practice of this sport ceased to be exclusive of the elites in the first decade of the twentieth century.
