Forced displacement, mobility, and gender roles in the Colombian armed conflict

Abstract

This paper attempts to understand the forms and trajectories of forced displacement in Colombia, the strategies deployed during those trajectories, and their consequences in terms of gender roles. It makes use of data obtained through semi-structured interviews with female and male victims of the armed conflict who underwent forced displacement. The research reveals three intertwined and interrelated patterns of displacement according to the particularities of the armed conflict, as well as the history of displacement in the country and the ways in which people respond to that phenomenon. Both men and women develop strategies and adapt their roles in the context of a displacement that is psychologically, economically, and socially exhausting and costly.
