It is argued that there is in Brazil, from colonial times to the present, an endenic view of the country, that is, a view of nature, its beauty, grandeur and wealth, as the major reason for national pride, above other reasons such as the character of the people and national history. It is suggested that this view may be linked to an also persistent negative view of the people.
