THE TRANSLATION OF SOCIAL SCIENCE BOOKS IN BRAZIL: AN ANALYSIS OF ZAHAR EDITORES PUBLICATIONS (1957-1984)

Abstract

In this article, I analyze the editorial policy of Zahar Editores, a company that occupied a central place in the publishing of social science books in Brazil between the 1960s and 1980s. Through the analysis of the publisher's catalog, interviews, and historical documents, I seek to understand how the adoption of a publishing translation policy was fundamental for the configuration of social sciences in the country, in order to contribute to the understanding of the history of those disciplines by drawing attention to the material conditions of the circulation of ideas. The publishing of university textbooks and monographic titles by foreign authors served for Zahar as a strategy for insertion in the emerging market for higher education books. The publisher established significant interaction networks and made it possible to publish works and authors that became a reference in intellectual and political debates.
