BRAZILIAN UNIVERSITY TERRITORY: THE CAMPUS MODEL

ABSTRACT

The objective of this paper is to discuss, from a pedagogical and architectural perspective, the Brazilian university territory, the university campus model. To that end, we traversed a path that began with the creation of European universities from the twelfth century, located in the cities, passed through North American universities that settled in the country, to get to Brazil. Our first universities, focused on training staff necessary to the State, the political and cultural leaders, settled in the city. In the 1960s, with the modernization process of Brazilian society, the university came to be seen as the research locus to accelerate scientific and technological development. In the planning of university campuses, modernist-rationalist architecture was chosen. The reasons for this choice as well as a critique of the model were focused on the text.
