Open-access DEAF EDUCATION: OUTLINE OF AN ANALYSIS OF THE FIELD UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN A CONTEXT OF DISPUTES

ABSTRACT

In this text, we analyze how the field of education of deaf individuals has been constituted, the roles played, internal and external relations with other fields, their agents, institutions, and capitals. Our analysis is based on Bourdieu’s relational thinking, which contributes to unveiling the structures and movement in the field. For this purpose, the concept of field is crucial: it underlies the understanding of a relative autonomy and the objective relations that form the scenario of a logic and particular needs. The analysis enabled the elaboration of an outline of the field of deaf education, with the polarizations and epistemological bases that support the different discourses related to deafness and have repercussions in the field as effective educational approaches in public policies. The bilingual education of deaf students and their spaces of schooling are presented as challenges to the field. There is an expectation of consolidating a bilingual school for the deaf as a suitable space for their schooling that, in its essence, does not resemble the special schools of the past. In this context, the academic field can act as a political force as it intensifies the dialogue with the field of deaf education through an academic-scientific production that understands, in a relational way, the dynamics of the game in the field.
