Plurality of Terminologies and Concepts Designating Care for Hospitalized Students: a Systematic Review

ABSTRACT:

The educational pedagogical service that takes place in hospitals fosters the construction of students’ knowledge in health care. However, this practice encompasses numerous variations of terms, which designate this mode of service. The use of terminology proves to be a dilemma in the area, as it is common to come across, in scientific publications, a plurality of terms adopted to refer to the area. Given this, the objective of this study was to identify the frequency of terminologies used in national and international articles and to analyze the concepts addressing care for hospitalized students. This is a systematic literature review, which used qualitative and quantitative approaches. The survey of publications was carried out on CAPES Journal Portal, focusing on publications from the past 20 years (2003-2023). A total of 86 studies were fully analyzed, and the results indicated that only four of them justified the chosen terminology. Additionally, the term “Hospital Class,” adopted by documents from the Ministry of Education, refers to the physical space for educational support within the hospital, highlighting its pedagogical-educational aspect. The term “Hospital Pedagogy” is defined as the theoretical-methodological dimension underpinning professional practice and the teaching role, which extends far beyond pedagogical-educational duties.
