A course of astronomy and the students' preconceptions

The article describes the results obtained in a science course for students of fifth grade of middle school, with the aim of leading students to the comprehension of phenomena related to astronomy, as well as developing skills that foster a citizenly autonomy. The program utilized a constructivist methodology, based on the following parameters: i) the starting point is the preconceptions of the elements of the group, identified in previous research; ii) the carrying of the teaching proposal develops through multiple strategies, encouraging interactive peer participation; iii) The construction of the scientific knowledge is achieved through practical activities, with a wide variety of means and materials; iv) metacognition is stimulated throughout the program and considered a regular activity; and iv) the students' preconceptions are brought to evidence, analyzed and discussed by the teacher with the students, making that the scientific knowledge be (re)constructed by the group altogether. As a result of the program, we registered evidences of significative learning of the concepts and an evolution of the students in the direction of objectives of learning such as autonomy, self-confidence and reasoning abilities.
