Exceptions to optical geometrical principles: Heron and the reflection on mirrors

Hero of Alexandria used the principle of minimum path to explain reflection in plane and curved mirrors. In the case of curved ones, the principle is valid only for convex mirrors. This paper presents a history of Hero's principle and of its criticism during the early modern period, discussing the limits of legitimacy of the principle.
