Birrefringence in wave plates and optical activity of a sugar solution

In this paper we present a simple experiment developed to study the principal characteristics of birefringence. Wave plates are built with microscope slides and scotch tape and the birrefringence is determined and compared to a measurement performed with a polarized light optical microscope. The optical activity of a sugar solution is also studied and the relationship between the rotation angle of the polarization plane and the length and concentration of the solution is verified. All the results are dicussed according to theoretical models.
