Medical Ethics and the Medical Profession in a Brazilian City without a Medical School

Abstract:

The teaching of Medical Ethics at medical schools in Brazil is characterized primarily by a legalist and deontological view, which is insufficient for medical professional, to adjust to modern society. This study aimed to characterize the physicians working in a city in the interior of São Paulo which has no medical school, in terms of their degree of knowledge concerning Medical Ethics. Such knowledge will allow those in charge of undergraduate-level teaching and continuing education programs to conduct the necessary changes in their activities in order to ensure the enhancement and ethical optimization of students and practicing physicians.
