The Flexner report: for good and for bad

The Flexner Report, which is close to its 100 anniversary, and its author have been the center of debate and controversy until our days. This article presents a brief biography of Abraham Flexner and discusses the importance of his report for medical education. The authors analyze the relevance, the main criticisms and the limitations of his model for medical education. They start the analysis contextualizing the state of the art of the medical education at the time when the report was published and finish it, examining this kind of education in the present days. The authors also discuss the construction of a contemporaneous model taking into consideration the historical criticism of the model in which the physicians have been prepared, the present social needs of health, the new knowledge about the way we learn and its repercussions for the teaching-learning process as well as the national policy for undergraduate medical education.
